Why is Nonito Donaire not a bigger Star?

If he keeps winning he will get there. Most guys take a long time to become big boxing hits.

 

exactly after his biggest win he went on a milk carton then ppl wondered if it was a fluke

then he destroyed Sidorenko and people got excited and then nobody expected that Montiel early KO and now he is riding the wave

this fight wont do much for him i imagine but i like the fight

he is fighting a tough fighter unknown to US fans but its a great win

but only a great performance here will advance him further in popularity

kinda reminds me of Martinez vs Dzinziruk a high risk low reward fight where a champ came up to face a rising star still fighting for popularity

 

By the end of 2012 Donaire will bigger a star and by the end of 2013 as long he keeps winning he will be a super star, their is not a boxer out their with the talent this kid has
besides Pac and Mayweather and this kid is going to get better thats scary for whom ever faces him in the future.

 

Gayweather has a personality of a tree, articulates much worse than Donaire, fights boring fights, acts like a ******ed, yet he command millions.

 

Small fighters rarely cross over and become stars. If he continues to win and dazzle - and eventually starts fighting recognizable names - he'll start to make some serious noise amongst more than just the hardcore fans of boxing.

Heavyweights were king back in the day. Size in boxing still helps with exposure these days. The notion of watching little leprechaun doods scrap it out isnt that enticing, especially if you can watch micro-giants hit each other with booming punches. Watching this live, you can hear and feel the hits more than the pitty-pat hits of a flyweight. Nothing to do with skill or ability, all about mass.

The other factor is american exposure. How many flyweights and bantamweights are stand-out americans? If you're NOT an obvious american (white/black), are you going to get out of the way exposure on american tv? Errrr..... NO.
Thank god Donaire claims half of his nationality as american, or he'd have even less exposure on american tv.

Exposing outstanding fighters regardless of nationality on tv is a neat notion. Unfortunately, those guys who broadcast need to make money for some crazy reason. They dont attract much american viewers when broadcasting some euro champ the casual watcher has never heard of, vs a veteran/decent american fighter people can immediately identify with as a fellow countryman.
Its taking awhile for american casual viewers to identify Donaire as part american. His name looks and sounds foreign. We cant even say his last name right yet.

Yet there's another factor, a stigma vs little guys. There's the belief that little guys dont have the KO power because they lack the mass to clock the crap out of each other. Well, even back in the day, little doods were racking up KO's, but yet again lacked the exposure. Bruce Lee showed that there's another factor that develops explosive striking - speed/acceleration. I dont think ive ever seen a boxer cave in his opponent's skull like Donaire vs Montiel! As the lighter weight classes get more exposed due to cultural demand for faster/intense action, i think the casual viewer will realize they have just as much as KO power as the heavier weights.

 

:deal this pretty much. The guy is probably my fav fighter but he will have to take those risks. He could be the coolest fan friendly fighter out there but a ruthless hunter in the ring. He does fight more like Floyd than Manny maybe many expect the next great Filipino to fight like a Pacman rather than Floyd. Nonito is also tge most honest fighter out there you gotta respect him just like he can give credit to Pacman he wont be afraid to say something negative about his countryman either. Nonito should talk alittle smack talk cuz hey, he can back it up. He just really needs to keep winning. I think he will be popular not like Manny, but still huge.

 

top rank has already admitted that they didn't know what do with Nonito after Darchinyan. They are on uncharted ground now with the lower weight classes, with any luck he will be a mainstream star in 2 to 3 years. He just has to keep doing what he has been doing.

Also the moron that posted on here that Donaire will be a huge star when he moves up to 126? Yeah like any mainstream american can tell you who the hell fights at 126. They know manny, they know floyd and little else.

Manny became famous because of his skill and the fact that he was knocking people out and had an exciting style. The more Nonito fights and the more he keeps knocking people out the greater star he will become. Its quite simple really.

 

:yep I respect your honesty, but what you've described samething happened alot with Mexican Americans and Mexicans. There can be alot animosity at times and hate but thats natural because since your American born they think your privileged to all these things and they probably right. Still, I think by proving your dedicated deeply to both your roots you can win them over. Oscar thats where he failed, he lost his connection with the Mexican crowd due to his drug problems I guess and the Chavez fights were plain unnecessary. Idk what he was thinkin. Nonito just needs to be more Filipino than any Filipino and more American than any American out there. He speaks perfect English thats already a big plus. Even Mexicans like him I dont see what there isnt to like about Nonito.

Actually, one major reason why Pac got mainstream US media attention was because of their fascination regarding his iconic status in the Philippines. He was constantly referred to as Ali and Elvis rolled into one and much ado was made about how the whole nation and crime stops whenever he has a fight and how even the rebels lay down their arms just to watch him. All of these US media attention count towards his PPV buys.
