Evander in his prime was a great infighter. PERIOD. Yeah he was fast, but NOT at all slick. ie prime Byrd, Haye, Chambers. Holyfield would have the advantage over prime Byrd due to power, Chambers, power, and the advantage over Haye in chin, heart, and ring command. Using the Douglas fight to showcase Holyfields speed is a pisspoor example. While Douglas was one of the biggest underachievers in boxing history, he was that because of his lack of discipline outside the ring. Douglas trained hard for Tyson and came into that fight in top form, about 230 lbs. His career is tarnished by his ballooning weight. When he fought at 225-235 he was a wrecking ball, when he fought over 245, he was slow and a sitting duck for even slower, fatter, and dare I say tomato cans. When Holyfield fought Douglas it appeared as if James had conquered the world and was content to rule from his throne being handfed grapes(more like triplestacks) by maidens. Wladimir is a FAST bigman. His handpseed is 10X anything Douglas could muster, and IMO he has a better overall chin than Douglas. This isn't the best example either, but a slick boxerpuncher, Chris Byrd outclassed a 37 y/o Holyfield for the IBF title just a few months after Holyfield had his way with the prime Rahman. I had Holyfield almost shutting Rahman out in that fight as well. People credit Lewis for his wins over a shot to **** Tyson and Holy gets props similarly for that trainwrecked version of Mike, but Byrd fights and beats almost that same version of Holy and he gets ZERO credit. Of course we see what both K2 did to prime Byrd, but for some reason no one will give either credit for winning 26/29 rounds vs a prime, slick Byrd. We all know that styles make fights, and a prime Holyfield is a sitting duck vs ANY version of Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko.
George Foreman, age 42, 260 lbs, slow, plodding, but with iron fists, iron chin, etc was a stylistic dream for a young fast Holyfield. That said, the 225lb David Haye or the 215lb Chris Byrd were faster and slicker than any version of Holyfield. Holyfield had the better chin than Haye, and more power than Byrd, but IMO both prime Haye and prime Byrd beat Big George just as decisively as did preprime Holyfield.
Preprime Byrd beat slightly past prime Holyfield just a few short months after Holyfield dominated prime Rahman. Holyfield got better with age, similar to Wlad....having his best years between 32-38/39. He was beatable by bigger guys who could handle him from the outside with their own speed(Lewis) or slicker guys who could outwork him like Byrd.
Holyfield was shot after the Lewis fights imo. Holyfield was lucky to get the decision over Ruiz in the first fight, very lucky imo, and was actually put on his ass by Ruiz in the rematch. Byrd outboxed him, Toney knocked him out, then Larry Donald outboxed him. Holyfield was done when he fought Rahman, its just that Rahman wasn't very good to begin with imo
Holyfield's prime was in the early 90's yet 10 years later he's still only slightly past his prime when losing to Byrd? atsch
Yes they were slicker than Holyfield but being slick and outboxing Wlad would never be a strategy to beat Wlad unless your Holmes or prime Ali. Holyfield's lack of slickness would not be detrimental as his aggression, pressure and workrate are much more beneficial attributes when going up against Wlad. And Haye is not faster then prime Holyfield, he's more powerful but Holyfield was cleary faster.
Let's see. 205lb 6.2" Holyfield going at 6'6" 245lb Wlad with the strategy to get inside. Is that the plan? atsch
Both excellent boxers Holyfield 10 times more heart and determination better chin, would be able to get inside and Wlad would not be able to hold him always, he would eat some combinations. As i said i'm not writing Wlad off like he would not win for sure, but dont try to say Holy doesnt have a chance, cause Holy is far better than any opponent Wlad ever faced!!!
Exactly.....the K2 haters always point out crude, slow, plodding big men when they say their slick black fighters could beat them. It's an insult to put Wlad/Vitali in the same sentence as Valuev, Carnera, Bowe etc. Those guys were slow and had little skills aside from their size. The K2 are in a different league than the current crop of giants, and would KO1 the monsters of yesteryear.:rofl
