Another ko for hagler, early..possibly round 3-4. hearns coudnt get the leaverage on his punches and hagler would target his weak chin with his powerfull combinations!
Ooo Geez... the Leg Massage thing.. His legs were wobbly cause he's always had a weak chin and got tag numerous times by a bigger and stronger man... No excuses needed.. that is why his legs looked like Jello
with Hearns you have to throw out logic. Roldan,Kinchen and Barkley were fights he was moving up and down in weight with. Each fight. Later he still took an alright punch. Hearns hit Hagler too clean in the first fight, and still Hagler had to fight a perfect fight of staying close and staying intense to win. Most people see the 3rd round result without seeing how hard Hagler had to fight to win. He had to take everything Hearns had and stick to him chest. And Marvin was getting tired in round 3. Had Hearns not been so tired, I don't think Hagler would have been very fresh. In the HBO version of the fight, Leonard is heard to say after round 2 that Hagler is arm weary. There is a reason Hagler did not fight Hearns again. and it was going to be a big fight. He just didn't seem to want the rematch.
Hearns doesn't break his hand and boxes a lot smarter. He might win a decision but I can't see him KOing Hagler. On the other hand Hagler always has the chance to catch up with anyone, so it would have been interesting.
the thing I do not agree with here is that Marvin in the second was taking his offense on angles, as though this has nothing to do with Hearns being tired. Hearns legs were gone in the 2nd round so Marvin could be a little more aggresive, but he was arm weary.. Had Hearns been able to have fresh legs in round 2 and have energy, everytime Marvin made a move, Hearns would have been able to jump in and land his punches like he did in round one. In round 3 Hagler was tired and Hearns was starting to pick him up and down as he used to say in some interviews, but by that point Hearns was exhausted. Hearns in a rematch would have used the jab and had room to punch after working Marvin up and down. Hagler's best bet in a rematch would be the jab and landing when Hearns got reckless, but if Hearns fought a smart fight I think he busts up Marvin by round 6. If Leonard could beat Marvin, so could Tommy, but it would be tough. Leonard did have better later movement and defense than Tommy, but Tommy had a better jab and power.
Hearns landed his Sunday punch square on a charging Hagler's skull and only managed to stop him in his tracks for a nanosecond of the fight. He is not stopping Marv bar cuts.
Leonard had one thing in spades that Tommy just didn't have a whole lot of. Durability. Tommy, no question, has the skills and gifts to get the outboxing of Hagler done if he's spot on and punch perfect. But he doesn't have the lateral movement or the head movement to not get hit, and when he got hit, he really, really didn't enjoy it. When it happened a couple more times, he got KTFO. Not even a subtle KO. Chin cracked. Out. Done. Tommy demonstrated he could hit Hagler, but he didn't do a good enough job demonstrating he could not get hit: At no point was he in enough control of the fight that he had it completely taken over, which he would need to do for 15 straight rounds against Marvin. He shook Hagler, he didn't hurt him bad enough for a kayo to look even remotely probable.
I don't think that was not Tommy's best punch. It was high on the head and hit quick, but not with all his leverage like he hit Shuler with. He might not stop Marvin, but he might, and I think Marvin knew in the rematch he might get hit cleaner and didn't want to take a chance, knowing he already beat him.
after the first fight this would be dissapointing i think, Hearns should move more and sideways. Hagler on points
the thing is , Hearns was the better fighter over Hagler, but Hagler had the stylistic advantage. I think Hearns does better in the rematch and Marvin could not reach that level of intensity in a rematch. I think Marvin himself proved that Hearns would be tough in a rematch.. He knew he could only beat Hearns conclusively if he went to war with Tommy.
