He could have, he was even more gone then than in the first, but despite being completely out of it at that point Benn did recover and come back so maybe he was proved right in some sort of brutal way

these days in britain a fighter in that condition would never be allowed to carry on though

the ref was terrible all round though

ive always found that first round kinda odd how benn seems like hes already pretty much knocked out on the ropes just hanging there motionless, takes 2 more huge punches completely flush completely defenceless, and yet gets back up at 6 or something

 

Odd? It's called refusing to lose and powers of recovery.

But i think i know what you're getting at. There is a fight ( i can't remember which) were a fighter gets caught and is out before he hits the deck, as his head it's the canvas it seems to bring him back around.

But i don't think this applies here. Benn was out and got himself together in time. Falling through the ropes helped him as the referee gave him the time to get back in the ring.

 

I did wonder at the time if the Ref was in any way influenced by Benns Rep for Firing back when hurt and in desperate straights, Ala the Logan fight, and perhaps decided that on Benns home ground, and with Benn's Vocal fans in attendance (Probably the whole venue attendees !) that barring being able to actually render a 10 count - he would leave any "waving off " to Benn's own corner - And if they didnt throw in the white towel - he wasnt going to be accused of ruining the home town hero's defence, fearing cries of premature Stoppage ?? - Just a thought, Ref's must have their anxieties too.

If i remember rightly about this time (?) Lamar "Kidfire" Parks was closing in on a title shot of some kind, Until enforced Medical retirement.

 

I am going to be honest here, and it will do me no favours.

Without hindsight:

I put quite a bit of money on McClellan in one, as well as having plenty of bets at work, on McClellan inside four, or I lose the bet.

I was pretty smug in the first, and when Benn went down, I just assumed he had a 20 count, and had no issue with the count.

As the fight went on, I got patriotic and cheered on Benn, giving him all the kudos for overcoming the first and I believe the eighth round assaults.

As we left the Arena and went for that Hellish journey home, (Frankie boys arena sucked) we had a few drinks, and I came to the conclusion McClellan had quit like a dog, and with hindsight, that had always been his problem throughout his career; if it was not all going his way, he quit.

It was only the next day I found out about McClellan's terrible injuries.

My point is, I had no problem with any moment of the fight, despite being initially being strongly pro Gerald. The referee and McClellan's corner IMO did nothing wrong, without the use of hindsight, which is always in 20/20 vision...

The referee's unwillingness to stop it (early) was vindicated by Benn coming back to win.

People saying the ref should've stopped it early are talking bollocks, Benn was never 'out on his feet', he was just shook up. I suppose Corrales-Castillo I should have been stopped in Castillo's favour 'eh?

 

I’m not being wise after the event. If that was my fighter and he got hurt and had blurred vision in training only to hang his mouth piece out and blink a lot during the fight, and this was not a recognised mannerism I had not witnessed Gerald do before I would have pulled him out. Fighters hate being stopped but if you know your fighter you know when something is wrong. Its no good hoping the ref does the right thing so the fighter cant blame you. A second watches his fighters back.

 

Regardless of the tragic ending, its still the greatest 168 lb. title fight to date in 2011.... I swear to Amon-Ra, I believe G-Man was injured physically by the accidental headbutt in round 9... Benn threw a shot that missed, but then slipped and fell forward into G-Man's forehead.... Both heads clashed that saw G-Man get the worse end of the butt..... Right there, G-Man seemed to fade / go down hill at that juncture..... I think Benn injured G-Man with that wicked-ass butt..... WORD!

It was a great fight.I watched on tv at a dog race trip.Started off with just 2 of us watching it but by the end about 30 people were crowded around the tv and had ****ed the dogs off.
It is just such a shame about the injuries to Gerald.I have not watched the full fight since,have seen clips of it(usually round 1) but because of what happen it makes it seem a bit horrible to watch it.

 

Watched it in the pub with a few mates, evey single one of us going crazy!!
It was a brilliant fight and there hasn't been one like it since.

In the aftermath I was gutted for McClellan, my pitbull however, was delighted.

 

McCellan was hardly a saint, what with the dog fighting crap he was involved in, but at the same time, he didn't deserve to end up as a vegetable.

 

While I was watching the fight as it happened I thought it was the greatest fight I had ever seen but the aftermath with McClellan's injuries tainted the fight for me. Took me about 10 years before I could watch it again. It's still a great fight but you can't really enjoy it as you know the tragic outcome.

 

Frankie Liles-Tim Littles 2 was a wild,wild fight though not in the same league as Benn-McClellan, although I'm not 100% sure Frankie had the title at that point.
