Why are American fight attendances so pitiful?

What kind of garbage excuse is that?

The UK has four leagues of football that draw big crowds, cricket matches that draw 20,000 and both rugby league and rugby union that can draw 90,000 crowds so stop with that garbage.

Boxing is not mainstream in the UK anymore either but you will still get 20,000 fans for good British title fights.

There are just more loyal sports fans over here, fact.

 

Let's see, for Hopkins-Dawson.

Neither guy is exactly exciting.
Neither guy has a connection to the area, fight might have sold better had they had it in Philly or Atlantic City. Not sold out, but sold better.
I don't remember any advertising for the fight.
The fight was shoved onto PPV after HBO ran out of money in their budget.

 

All depends how the fighters and events are promoted, in addition to how their priced. In Grand Rapids, MI, Troy Rowland was drawing nearly 5,000 (lots of energy from the crowd) per non-tv fights when he was on a win streak. The local promoter really built his fights up into attractions with buzz.

I remember the last time Mayweather fought in Grand Rapids, HBO, w/Marquez-Gainer on the undercard, maybe 7,000 people in attendance, so-so atmoshpere. Lot a times, the big timers promote poorly. Don King (as much as I never liked him), was actually pretty good at promoting the region for his shows and gave them buzz. But he's too old now, him and Shaw put on a horrific show in Detroit with Bradely-Alexander. No effort into that production and it showed.

 

UK four leagues of football do not compare to the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL forget about it!!!

Either way I see your point the UK fans seem to be more passionate when it comes to boxing. But my point was boxing is cultural thing.

Not bad at all.

 

Because we don't have any skilled exciting fighters. Fans paying money want to be on the edge of there seats and be able to expect some sort of action or drama.. Our fighters for the most part have become safety first fighters. Our exciting fighters have short shelf lives and or sloppy styles..

 

America is a huge country and they have historically had many good fighters during each era, so unlike smaller countries like Britain with Hatton, Calz, Haye and say, the Philipines with Pac they probably won't get a good chunk of the country behind them.

All of the full-time NFL stadiums seat between 60,000 and 83,000 fans

most all are at capacity every game....

 

nfl draws in 75000+ people a week in one stadium.... and there are how many stadiums being used? 16?

 

Boxing isn't popular anymore, simple as that. Go ask a random stranger who Andre Berto, Andre Ward, or Chad Dawson are. They'll say they have no idea, that or to get the **** away from them.

One more point. Team sports gather a bigger audience because people root for a team rather than an individual. Chicago Bulls is a bigger name than most(if not all) present boxers

 

American fight attendance is pitiful because American sports journalism is pitiful. Boxing gets less coverage and promotion than skeet shooting. You can't appreciate and support what you've never even heard of.

 

This plus maybe more fans aren't getting excited anymore with the current crop of unexciting boxers. Plus ppv kills the appetite of fans. Fans will always find it difficult to support something that they cannot afford.
