Ultimately, I believe that his retirement will be good for boxing as the division will open up a bit and give some of the protected guys more incentive to put themselves out there and take a risk. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Povetkin fan but I think we can all agree that he's been ready to for a world title shot for at least a year. At least Helenius and Boytsov can say they aren't ready...because they aren't...but Povetkin has a deep amateur background and, besides Haye, has more athletic ability than any other HW, IMO.
No. Haven't been excited about anything in the heavyweight division for several years. Vitali retiring will simply increase the level of mediocrity in the top 10. Bunch of overweight, under trained club fighter's playing musical title's.
When Vitali does retire for good, you can bet those who now claim to welcome his exit, will then be longing for the days when he was steemrolling every single opponent, even at 40 years old. Vitali is an all time great. Some won't realize or admit that til he's gone. And when Wlad is also gone, we can't say for sure, but I bet we'll then see another era as we had when King had four titleholders, all afraid to unify anything. Unless someone like Helenius or Boystov turn out to be a legit world class champion, and that's yet to be seen.
I'll get excited when lazy and unmotivated contenders finally get hungry enough to face Vitali. I'm sick of seeing idiots like Dimitrenko, Povetkin etc. wait for Vitali to turn 50 before they consider boxing him. I actually hope Vitali never retires and just sticks around to **** off these little dip**** contenders. If they want a belt they have to challenge the king of the hill. That's how it always worked.
I think the only guy that has a shot at Vitali is the slick boxer that is so rare in the division. Vitali eats sluggers for breakfast. And there's not many that are gonna outwork him outright. Johnson showed that a skilled enough opponent can make Vitali whiff most of his punches. Johnson also landed the few times he attempted. If he had overcome his defensive mindedness, he could given a better account of himself. It's gonna take one more skilled than Chambers. I thought Solis would give a better go of it. If he had shown up motivated and in shape, who knows.
As long as he remains healthy and dominant i want him to continue (assuming he remains motivated) and teach these idiots you cant waite for the king to retire before you challenge for the throne. If he does start to slip though i want him to retire, because at the same token i dont want 1 of these peons getting paid off for waiting for Vitali to get old. I will miss him when hes gone though, how often do you see a 6.8 250lb fighter throwing 70 punches a round while having absolute mastery of distance and timing. I can appreciate Wladimir but Vitali just has that mean streak and hes not afraid to get hit which makes him infinitely more exciting to me. *edït: If Johnson would have opened up more he would have gotten hit more, Vitali is a counterpuncher and the baby pin gave him almost nothing to work with.
great post i never quite understood why american fans turned their back on him he was loved here up til retiring did the whole Rahman and injury episode really hurt his reputation here that bad
