Im a die hard boxing fan, but i respect anyone who will get in a "ring" and fight another man head on. So I have decided to educate myself on MMA (maye you respect that or maybe not) either way what I want to know is who are the top dogs in each division, what are some of the major upcoming events in MMA? What are some of the classic MMA fights an aspiring fan should watch to get him enticed in the sport? Thank you for your time. :thumbsup
I didn't say i wanted to become and active participent in MMA, im perfectly happy in being a competitive ametire boxer and some day a professional. All i want is to become a fan of MMA so just educate me enough on that
Fortunately you can learn grappling inactively. You might not be able to do it yourself but you can begin to understand the nuances and the sophistication. Learn what a submission actually is, what it really does, what types of submissions there are (blood chokes, air chokes, joint locks, spine locks, pressure, etc.), and the basics of how to apply each of those. Then work your way to more sophisticated aspects such as set ups and leading and all the good stuff that goes into it.
a good path to mma for a boxer would be through k-1 look for some buakaw, bonjasky, ghita, saki etc, understand how low kicks are used to set up the distance and so on. then look for strikers in mma, like aldo, a. silva, rua, dos santos and see how striking is affected by grappling and at last look for grapplers, sonnen, jb jones or velasques, understand the ground game, guard, half guard, submissions etc.
Basically the UFC champions are the top dogs. There are some stragglers in other orgs, and there'll no doubt be debate over this, but essentially the UFC guys are the guys to beat. -Cain Velasquez at HW (fighting Junior Dos Santos next weekend) -Jon Jones at LHW (fighting Lyoto Machida at UFC 140, Jones has already fought three times this year, including winning and defending his title) -Anderson Silva at MW -Georges St Pierre at WW (scheduled to fight Nick Diaz at UFC 143) -Frankie Edgar at LW (check out his trilogy with Grey Maynard, particularly the second and third fights) -Jose Aldo at FW -Dominick Cruz at BW The upcoming event is Junior Dos Santos v Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight title on Fox on November 13th. The undercard is free on facebook (on the UFC fan page) or on fox.com, I believe. There will be some amazing fights on the undercard, including a very important lightweight match up (Guida v Henderson), so I highly recommend giving it a look. After that is UFC 139, featuring Shogun v Hendo, Faber v Bowles, Story v Kampmann and Silva v Le, all of which should be great fights. After that UFC 140 and 141, both of which are stacked from top to bottom and have some amazing potential. I see you've spotted the other thread, so I'll leave it at that.
try to learn and love the art of Brazillian jiu jitsu its groundwork mainly consisted of submissions and working off your back if you get taken down to the floor. The advice i would strongly suggest to you is that try to learn kicks aswell as this will allow you to have a better standup chance in mma. Best of luck :bbb
