Cotto already is on a legendary status as trinidad....It's somewhat saddening that so many people on here hype trinidad for Vargas yet he lost to the best Cotto has already beaten a few of the best and they are better than vargas

Cotto seems to be getting 10-15 % better every time he fights.

Trinidad was kind of a "throw-back" to the great Latin American fighters you used to see on home TV back in the 70's (Duran, Gomez, Alexis, Monzon, Cuevas, etc.) so people loved his fights.

Now it is all PPV and market timing.

Oscar is old and can't make 147 lbs. PBF for some reason doesn't want to fight Cotto.

Mosley at least had the "huevos" to fight Cotto.

If Cotto was to put a "whupping" on Oscar & PBF he would
be right up there with Tito.

    He just needs the chance.

I don't think he will either. But he'll still be loved like a hero there.

Slicksters, that's funny...Well first off all you are talking about 4 HOFs, (3) naturally bigger than Trinidad. He beat a prime De La Hoya, controversial or not. Hopkins is considered a top-5 MW of all-time by many and he fought a prime Hopkins. Winky is considered one of the best defensive fighters in the last 20yrs and was in his prime as well. RJJ is considered to be the best SMW of all-time and a top-5 LHV of all-time and was past his prime. Both Hopkins and RJJ are somewhere in the top-50 p4p all-time as well.

So I would think losing to guys like that isn't really a bad thing. The fact that he fought guys with those types of credentials who were naturally bigger, except De La Hoya, (and 3 of the 4 being in their prime, De La Hoya, Hopkins and Wright) is pretty impressive.

Much more impressive than anything Mayweather has done, that's for damn sure. That's also what separates him from Cotto.

Cotto has the skills, toughness, heart, and available competition to surpass Trinidad and become the greater fighter of the two. Not saying it will happen because obviously he isn't unbeatable and there are some damn good fighters, but he has a chance. I wouldn't put it past him.

Wins over Mayweather, Williams, and several other welterweight contenders would push him past Trinidad in my opinion.

I strongly disagree. Most puertoricans, me included, did not like the idea of Tito coming back. He doesn't have the pop he once had in lighter divisions and his skills are held back by the mediocrity of his corner. I have been impressed with Cotto's ability to change his game depending on the opponent. Cotto has the tools to achieve and surpass Tito's accomplishments.

First of all, Cotto's last two fights in Madison Square Garden in 2007 put 18 000 fans in the seats. Trinidad's fight against Roy Jones only put 12 000. Also, Cotto hasn't even had his big, career defining fight (ala Trinidad vs. DLH). That fight will come if he finally faces Mayweather. So comparing Cotto now, to Trinidad at the same stage of his career (say 1998, I'd say Cotto is a MUCH bigger name and draw. Prior to fighting Oscar, Tito could only put about 12 000 fans in the seats at MSG to fight Whittaker. Cotto put 18 000 in the seats to see him fight Mosley in a fight that had eerily similar implications. Also, Trinidad had never come close to headlining a PPV card until after he beat DLH. Cotto has already headlined a few, and did very decent numbers against Mosley (400 000 buys, 150 000 buys more than Trinidad did against David Reid, the fight following his win over DLH).

So to me it's pretty clear that Cotto is well on his way to being another Trinidad figure. If he somehow beats Mayweather, he could very well eclipse Trinidad in terms of popularity.

Miguel Cotto is a great boxer but will not become a Trinidad. Trinidad was something special. He didn't fight opponents, he dispatched them brutally. Miguel slowly wears down an opponent whereas Trinidad knocked the crap out of them with one punch. Trinidad was more crowd pleasing for this reason and was able to transcend boxing becuase of it.

Miguel Cotto is probably at best a welterweight
Felix Trinidad can probably fight comfortably as a super middleweight.

When it comes to accomplishments though Cotto is going to soon be ahead of Trinidad.

miguel cotto will never be at the same level as felix trinidad.......

If you mean in terms of skill he is as close , if not already surpassed one-dimensional Tito. In terms of legacy you won't know unless you can watch into the future.

I agree. But interestingly, even if Cotto beat Mayweather/Williams I would still favor Tito to beat him prime for prime at 147. I'm not sure what would change that, Trinidad is just an incredibly difficult matchup for Cotto.. especially with his vulnerable chin. What do you think?

That has more to do with Cotto fighting on the eve of the Puerto Rican Parade and tickets for the Trinidad - RJJ fight being grossly over-priced (by good ol' Don King) more than anything else.

This is such a stupid and common misconception. Trinidad is a very good boxer that throws a variety of good punches, head shots, and brutal body shots. You don't have the resume (or beat Pernell Whitaker for that matter) being one-dimensional.

And losing to Hopkins, Winky and RJJ (3 naturally bigger guys who are all HOF with 2 of them being all-time "greats") doesn't make you one dimensional.

Cotto even said himself that he is no Felix Trinidad. Im glad that he has that mentality and isnt letting that bother him. He is Miguel Cotto he doesnt need to be Trinidad. They even have different personalities. Were Trinidad was more like Ray Leonard, Cotto is more like Marvin Hagler.

Trinidad only knows one way to fight. He has no tactics whatsoever.
If you don't understand you are A. new to the game or B. the one who's stupid.

Throwing ''a variety of punches'' isn't about technique. I am talking tactics.
In terms of technique you can't speak of someone being one-dimensional (unless he can for example only throw a right).
