The majority of people didn't think he was capable of beating Martinez and then again coming up against Katsidis. I'm not asking what was the better win, just which victory/performance surprised you the most?
Katsidis. Didn't rate Martinez, had no reason to. Beating Nicky Cook didn't have me doing cartwheels.
personally Martinez simply because he had not been active for almost a year (for whatever reason) before the warm up fight against Youssef Al Hamidi then straight in to the World Title fight.
Even though Katsidis is clearly more proven than Martinez, the win over Roman was definitely more of a surprise. Kats is clearly a little worn and Burns had all the physical advantages over him despite moving up in weight. Cue criticism from every Scot on the forum but I still think it's more of a case of him being managed well than his actual talent level but still I've got to give Ricky Burns credit, he's doing really well now and I hope he gets a few more good wins in his career :good
Sorry have to disagree, some of the combinations Ricky was producing were outstanding, don't think anyone can question his talent. Really thought he had more strength to his shots as well and his bodyshots were excellent.
Kats definitely. Martinez was quite poor in all reality, he was coming off a very tough fight with Muniga ( sp? ) in which he looked anything but world class. Kats only lost to genuine world class fighters before and I was sure he'd break Burns down. Was a very good performance. Most of the top lightweights seem to be planning on moving up so Burns can pick up a strap handy enough. Hopefully ****** has faith now and provides more stiff opposition though
Katsidis because, regardless of whether he'd faded a bit, Ricky actually fought on even terms with him. I didn't like him leaning on the ropes, but his defence was tight and those body punches... Ricky is really turning them into a great weapon. He doesn't need to be a banger with work like that.
The Martinez fight suprised me the most. Partly due to my ignorance of Burns improved ability. I gave him no chance based on old peformances I had witnessed. I picked Burns over Kats so was not really suprised. I had 2 small bets for Burns win & Burns UD on betfair.
I was more surpirsed by the Martinez victory, just because i hadnt seen Martinez and thought Rickys inactivity and fighting at commonwealth level would hinder him.
i will admit i always thought ricky burns was shiiiiiit! like painfully bad, couldn't crack an egg, stupid hair, stupid tattos but after saturday when he beat katsidis after all the abuse he was getting for the evensen fight and the african assasin fight before hes made a fan of me, katsidis is shot, martinez is ****, hes never beat anyone good but i like the mean and just pray they keep him away from rios and any tattoo parlours
Martinez just. Prior to that nobody knew Burns was capable of producing a world-class upset. I think there was a bit of wariness heading in against Katsidis even among those who fancied Mick's superior breadth and quality of experience and thought he'd ultimately be too much of a gale force. (and/or got snookered by how vintage he looked in smashing Lozada).
Martinez, simply cos Ricky hadnt mixed with that level of opposition before. After Ricky outboxed a cracking fighter & murderous puncher in Martinez, I was well confident that Ricky at the new weight with more muscle & power would do a number on Katsidis, people thought I was just picking Burns to stop him out of some scottish bravado thing, but Im an old timer & a scottish boxing expert. I didnt get the Burns stoppage win correct, but Katsidis is a hard ******* of a man.
