Been training for about 3 weeks now I got the basics down and I've been sparring with people who have been training much longer than me. Since I'm one of the taller guys in the gym I have an obvious reach advantage. I'm not getting dominated in sparring as much as I thought I would mainly because of my reach, power and reflexes. I always go at 50% and so does my opponent and I know this sounds really arrogant but even with a 50% clean body blow makes them stagger and stop to catch their breath. If they try to get inside I can just keep them away with my reach. I also manage to dodge/deflect a lot of punches since the guys I sparred with have been kinda slow compared to the coach that took me apart the first 2 lessons. Also when they do get inside, am I allowed to push them off me?
I don't know, honestly we see these threads all the time, im not saying its bad to feel good but honestly if a 3 week guy can beat up the guys then. 1. hes sparring **** people even though they have been years training ( I used to beat up a 7 year black belt when i 3 months simply cause he doesn't have heart and doesn't give a **** ) or 2. Pretty much 1 allover again. :good And mate, don't aim to win right now, aim to try everything you can think about no matter how hard you get knocked, that way you'll motivate yourself and youll learn the wide range of the sport.. Technique is 50% of your boxing, your technique with head punch and footwork all make up reflex power and just cause your tall doesn't mean you always have an advantage. It all depends on the other guy. Another 20% comes from your fitness and brain and the remaining 50% comes from your heart, yes you have to work at your 120%
If you don't have proper punching technique your strength, speed, stamina or power won't be of any significance. Before you can develop all other qualities you must learn how to throw punches correctly, there's no getting around it.
if you show talent thats good, just dont get a big head, because their is plenty of people out there who can wreck your **** without breaking a sweat
This. I'm a big strong kid myself, but I haven't started boxing yet, and I know I could never seriously take a trained fighter. Go in hoping for the best, but expecting the worse. Prepare like everyone you go up against is a world-class boxer, and don't get cocky. I haven't started yet myself, as I said before, but that applies to everything in life.
