Is Joe Frazier's win over Ali the best win in the history of the sport?

It might be

 

It's the most monumental win. I wouldn't say it's the outright best or most impressive, although it's definitely up there.

 

The only things that come close is Duran over Leonard
Leonard over Hagler
Max over Louis
Jack Johnson over the Great White Hope
Ali over Foreman

 

Depends who you ask, but for the majority, it's second to Jefferies Vs Johnson

Id probably put LaMotta over SRR ahead of it. Tough one though.

 

:huhHow so? Jeffries was a washed up fighter. In terms of significance at the time that fight was huge and generated massive interest among the public, but it was certainly not the best win, or even one of them.

In terms of historical and cultural significance, Louis/Schmeling II was bigger than Jeffries/Johnson, anyway.

 

It's up there Duran's win over SRL (with Ali's win over Foreman being third)

 

Nah, for a few reasons.

A) Robinson was still relatively young, probably not quite at the peak of his powers.

B) It was a 10 round non-title fight.

C) LaMotta was always the larger man, and held a 16 pound weight advantage over Robinson in that one.

With that said, LaMotta arguably deserved the decision in their 5th fight in 1945 as well.

yeah the weight does prevent this from beating Ali / Frazier to be fair.

Its hard to say what we are looking for in a "best win", an underdog victory? Buster vs Tyson ....A close evenly matched fight? Hearns / Leonard. A great fighter losing their "0"..

 

Its up there with the greatest fight of all time in which Benny Leonard came out of retirement to whoop Max Schmeling just to give Hilter that "dont mess" kinda warning.
