Thoughts on Pac vs Marquez 3

Pacquiao has always relied heavily on his speed and power. It is a well-known boxing truth that fighters who rely heavily on physical strengths (eg Pacquiao, Roy Jones) decline noticeably faster in terms of boxing effectiveness than fighters who rely more on counterpunching poise and technique (eg Marquez, Mayweather). This has always been true, and always will be.

I really believe that Pac right now is a lesser fighter than he was in 2009 when he completely annihilated Cotto and Hatton. He doesn't have the same intensity, speed, power and relentlessness. He just doesn't, and this is coming from someone who has his career set and has watched his recent fights countless times.

    JMHO.

It's Marquez spacing and movement and sneaky counter punching that's doing it.This defuses Pacquiao intensity, speed, power and relentlessness.

No excuse! Pacquiao got schooled again. In fact, Marquez should have won

    twice already.

    no, no, and just no:nono

floyd is more marketable than pac, jmm already lose to floyd so lets think about that for one second.

I believe the judging for pac-floyd will be as fair because either one of brings a lot of money. To say floyd will get rob of a decision to a pac fight is an insult to floyd's drawing power

But hatton and Cotto had styles which played right into Pac's hands. Cotto fought the wrong fight and tried to come at pac... and hatton fought the only fight he could and his chin is just not that great.

The next fights Pac fought he had a guy who just covered and attempted to survive in clottely. Obviously this can't be an indication of him "slipping"... he goes on to fight Margo and looks sensational, but Margo had the style which played right into Pac's hand like Hatton and Cotto, only margo was bigger and lacked more skill than cotto. He fights mosley, when mosley tried to come forward, he got put on his ass. Mosley has a solid chin and gets put on his ass. You name one fighter who is on some big decline who could've did that mosley? But when mosley was on the backfoot, losing of course as he is not a natural boxer, pac looked frustrated. It's the style that makes him SO! He is not in some massive decline... Rjj situation is different... Pac was simply outboxed... if Marquez tried to brawl with pac, he would've got his ass beat, like every other fighter who tries.

I don't think this proves much about JMM or Manny except that JMM has a good style for Manny. Manny is undefeated against Marquez.

I was rooting for Marquez and he gave one of his best performances but to be real, the Pacquiao he fought in there was not the same one that fought Cotto, nor the same one that he fought the last two times. He either had a terrible night in the office , or he is simply getting old. Something I noticed in watching close coverage of 24/7 and the weigh in is that Pacquiao is aging and looking old in his face (wrinkled bags under his eyes). His speed and quickness he displayed at times appeared to be cheap bravado with little substance as opposed to how he used to use his speed before. Ladies and gentlemen, Pac may have turned old overnight. Whatever the reason is, it made for a more competitive fight, I would like to see a rematch and I am not really interested in seeing a Pac vs Mayweather fight at this point. If this is the best Pac can do at this point of his career, he wouldn't fare well against Mayweather.

Damn I'm still disappointed with Pac!

I have only two thougts after this fight:

    1. JMM was severely underestimated. He looked magnificent in the fight, a tad slower, but obviously still has the perfect style and timing to school Pac. And take him him to school indeed he has done on Pac.

    2. I don't think Pac belongs in the ring vs Mayweather. Mayweather will open a cut on Pac's face as early as the 4th round.

So really, I just hope Pac retires.
Mayweather vs Sergio looks infinitely more attractive now.

However, I disagree with the most of you saying JMM won.
He deserved it alright, but I still had it 115-113 Pac.

I don't disagree with the idea that Pac has declined since 2009. A fight that relies on his speed and physical abilities more so will decline earlier and faster than more technical boxer types. This much is obvious, and Pac is 32 and nearing 33. At the same time, Marquez has easily declined as well, although I was impressed at how well he handled the weight. Pac's style has always been more suited to move up in weight classes than Marquez, but Marquez has the style and counter-punching ability to give Pac trouble... but do so at 38 years old and at 2 weight classes above your last fight is pretty damn impressive.

I think Pac's skills have improved since 2008. The right hand improvements have been greatly exaggerated and over-emphasized. He still very much depends on landing that big left based on his stance and the way he fights. However, Pac's counter-punching ability exists but it's a damn shame that he covered up to Marquez so often. That allowed Marquez to score, but at times when Marquez feinted forward Pac would through the right hook to counter Marquez somewhat effectively. I thought the fight would go the distance but did not expect to Marquez to actually win. It's a damn surprise. It's real vindication for those that said Pac lost to Marquez in the second fight because he was drained.

Lastly, got to say Marquez seemed to punch very strongly. He just looked well for the weight. If there was much of a decline in Pac's it's in his mentality than anything else. He just doesn't have the same intensity he once had. He's not the same killer anymore. The Pac of 04-08 had more intensity and activity, and thus actually caused Marquez to have more problems. This Pac tried boxing, and didn't really put Marquez out of his comfort zone at all. If Pac were to fight anywhere near the way he did tonight against Mayweather he would get schooled. Lateral motion or not. Marquez could go in back lines in this fight and still have success. Even without outside position he still did well. Bravo Marquez.

This is basically an excuse thread then?

Which would make sense if Pacquaio hadn't been outboxed twice by Marquez before just 1 year before you claim Pac was in his prime. Oh yea Pacquaio's prime last 2 years against 2 opponents without a counter right and little defence

Agree with you on Pac's speed. All the shadow-boxing. It seems like cheap bravado. He doesn't seem to have the same power with the same speed as he once did. Now, I don't think he just grew old over night. It was Pac's activity and lack of intensity that seemed most troubling. What did he throw? Less than 40 punches a round? How does that compare to the last fights he had with Marquez? I don't think we can go from "Old overnight, worse than 04-08" to "He's too big, and too improved at this stage for Marquez" the day before. I agree to what you're saying only to an extent. I still think we need to give credit by saying Marquez performed far better than we thought he would, as opposed to Pac performed worse than expected. Even Marquez seemed to handle Pac's punches well "When Mosley just raved of Pac's power."

Yeah, at the end of the day we can't over-analyze. Pac's prime can't consist of the two year gap between the Marquez fights. The last fight excuse was how Pac was drained. Now Pac is past it. Hell, Marquez is too. Remember, the same guy that struggled with Katsadis? He just has Pac's number.
