Mayweather V Pacquaio

I need to watch the fight still, but sometimes a bad performance against a stylistic nightmare can twist perceptions. Was Manny THAT bad where Mayweather will now drub him?

 

Nah, Mayweather always would school Pacquiao, this fight last night has done nothing to alter my opinion

 

well he was that 'bad' that mayweather would drub him if he fought like that against floyd - dont want to take all the credit away from marquez though he was a major part in pac looking so much worse than usual

 

Mayweather versus Pacquiao of the Cotto fight would be a very competitive fight. Pacquiao has slipped.

 

Regardless of any era of their careers Mayweather ALWAYS beats Pacman.

Marquez has more of a case for beating Pacquiao 3 times now than Pacquiao has a case for winning one or two of them.

 

Is it perhaps that Marquez just has the tools to neutralise Pacquiao?

I try not to let things like this skew my perspective. Manny has always looked limited against JMM, but never as limited against anyone else. As Jpab says elsewhere, Manny's addition of a right hand and those feints makes him difficult to time and handle.

Perhaps it's just that JMM is so cool-headed in the ring that he doesn't worry about those. And the southpaw right hook is a mother****er for even the best schooled fighters to avoid, especially when you consider Floyd's issues with lefties.

 

Marquez' weakness is footwork, he doesn't have any weaknesses from the waist up, he can be dropped yes, not a stylistic weakness though so to speak, just a deficiency. Anyway, that's why Mayeather neutralised him so much, Mayweathers footwork and positional sense is brilliant. Anyway, Pacquiao at the end of the day is not the improved technician that a lot of people made out he was. A lot of people on the classic forum etc have been saying this for well over a year now and have been called Mayweather fanboys etc, which is nuts. If your main strengths are punching power and a slugging then no matter how fast you are you are going to be tee'd off on by Juan Manuel Marquez. It's outmanoeuvre him or deal with hell, plain and simple.

Some people don't half change their tune after ONE fight. Mayweather beats Pacquiao in a very tough fight, there's no chance it would be a landslide. I wouldn't be surprised if Pacquiao won, I'd be more surprised if it actually happened. :rasta

 

I'm not sure Floyds footwork was all that impressive against Marquez IMO Teeto.

Teeto; one thing I've said a few times when pressed on the issue. Marquez is one of the greatest composite punchers I've ever seen, let alone of this era :good

 

Styles make fights.

How many wars has Floyd Mayweather been in? What happens if Pacquiao manages to land one of the shots that put Marquez down 4 times in their 3 fights? What happens if Pacquiao gets even more defensive and doesn't present many opportunities? Maybe Manny should fight the entire fight on the back foot and see who gets blamed for it being stinker. What happens if MP throws 50/60 punches a round and Floyd can't handle his pace?

Juan Manuel Marquez is a warrior and a great counter-punching boxer that has performed brilliantly in 3 fights against Manny Pacquiao. Marquez is a far better combination puncher than Floyd Mayweather.

Sure Floyd could well beat Manny but please don't start giving Mayweather credit for something that Marquez has done.

 

I thought it was brilliant, pure footwork, a step here, a step there, the result was Marquez not ever being set in position to throw effectively. Almost Hopkins-esque I thought.

And on Marquez, high praise indeed Flea, but yes, tremendous combination puncher, a joy to watch. So good from the waist up that it has voided his weaknesses more often than not. I feel so bad for him right now man.

 

That's precisely it. Feinting has been a key component in Manny's success at these higher weights, he really has been sensational at it. Bigger men, be it Margarito, Mosley, or Cotto, have all been made to look ordinary because of it. It's an underrated trait to have, something that's not taught often, he'll move as if he's about to throw a shot, and they flinch, they have all flinched when Pacquiao has feinted before them, and what that has allowed Pac to do is rattle off loaded combinations against them, because they've positioned themselves to evade a solitary bomb.

Marquez just didn't let it happen, he seemed to almost be able to predict when and where he would feint. It diminished the element of surprise from his assaults, Marquez could see them coming and positioned himself to fire back accordingly. I'll hold my hands up here and say Juan Manuel Marquez made me look a fool this morning, he was masteful to a degree I didn't think possible.

Not against Manny it hasn't, in fact it's been imperative to the success he has had against him. In all three fights JMM has nullified Manny offensively with some of the most adept side-stepping I've seen in my time(which, granted, isn't especially long), it's been something that has been pretty underrated in his bouts with Pacquiao.

Just about every counter-left hook he's landed against Manny - and there have been a lot of them - has come from him side-stepping lunging left hands, or, as was also evident in this fight, lazy or over-eager jabs. He doesn't do it so much to land his right, but without some pretty good footwork he wouldn't have been landing all those lefts.
