I see your point and I will admit that I was one of those that crucified Ortiz for saying "he didn't derserve that" against Maidana. Cotto on the other hand said he wouldn't die in the ring "for what?", "the fans?" Cotto has a point and Ortiz DID TOO. Now I see what Cotto is saying and it makes sense. You live to fight another day. I won't question a fighters heart after all they are the ones fighting and risking their lives for our entertainment while we just sit behind a computer a critic them. A good example is Oritz by quitting when he had a chance and then moving on to become a WW Champion and having his highest pay day ever against Mayweather all while knowning intellegently when to call it a day. Margarito on the other hand, a warrior too many including me, not knowning when to quit and might or already did suffer from a damage that will affect him for the rest of his life. And by the looks of it, that eye could get worse if he takes a beating from Cotto and does not quit when he is suppose too.

I agree/disagree with Cotto to an extent but how come fans give him a pass when guys like Ortiz and Vitali get bashed for quitting

So by Cotto saying he cares about his family and wouldn't want to die knowing his family and children are left lonely without his expected and necessary support makes him heartless?. All his performances in the ring are completely forgotten by a worthless unknown fan like you because of a very logical and reasonable statement he made?, you're either 15 years old or 55 and a virgin if you can't relate with his comment in any way. Do you expect trash, worthless and poor(mentally and financially) fans like you to take care of his kids if he dies?

There are times when it's better not to say anything. We shouldn't question Cotto's determination in the ring. He was taking a beating against Margarito and maybe thoughts of his family crept in. But after seeing the picture and the guilt-by-reaction from Margarito, can you blame Cotto for quitting that night? A boxer has died from loaded gloves. Or, he could have ended up a vegetable (sorry for the term) like McLellan. Cotto should have worded his response differently perhaps with an interpreter. The intent came out all wrong.

 

When the time comes, every warrior will do what he has to. I've been there, you reluctantly get dressed, making sure everything is where it should be. You lace up your boots and pull them tight, check your gear and make sure evryhting is in working order. You kiss the wife and kids goodbye. You promise to be careful and tell them you will be back, in your heart you know you want to, and you would do anything to come back to them. Next thing you know, all hell has broken loose, you're thousands of miles away from home, and worse yet, you have no clear understanding of why you're doing what you're doing, but instinct and training take over. And you do what you have to for as long as you have to, or until is the case many times, your body can no longer continue, too tired, too weak to go on. That wasn't the worst part, carrying back your friends, flying home with the casket underneath your feet, that was the worst part. Point is, if you've been there, you know your limits, and no one has the right to question that unless they've been there with you. If you want to question a man's heart, you're free to do so, but first, I suggest you walk a mile in his shoes.

If Cotto did not possess the warrior's mentality then he would've let the Clottey fight go to the scorecards after the fourth round and won a TD. Rather, he fought on and risked both his health (taking a chance on exacerbating a nasty cut) and losing his title, to give the paying public what they came to see.

I don't read too much into the rhetoric.

 

Wow,people hating on a guy who has provided us with so many great fights just because he wouldnt risk his health for the sake of his family. When does the humane part kick into you guys? Its ok loving fighters because they are willing to die in the ring etc, but you can not criticize Cotto for basically saying that his children mean more to him than boxing.

 

I know this might be repetitive but have you ever boxed before in your life?

Because its sounds like you havent the slightest clue about what pro and amateur boxers go through in the ring. World class or not they all go through the same trials. Fighters have to make split second decisions that could save their life or give them brain damage. If you fought you would have more respect for them.

cotto has shown his balls over and over through the years. He has nothing left to prove to me you or any other boxing fan.
