Would today fans like fighters like Willie Pep, Billy Conn, and Pernell Whitaker?

relax nutjobbers, it was a general comment about defense first boxers .. . they will almost always need a more popular offensive fighter to get fans to buy - this is plainly obvious.

Pernell could stand in the pocket at times and he did run at times, this is no secret either. I will say this for the man, at least he had the courage to get in the ring with the most dangerous fighters of his generation even if he ran from some of them.

Not too much for casual boxers, but if a person knows about boxing it is obvious that they will have recognition as very skillful boxers, besides it is not wrong to put defense first (healthy future). Some will say they are boring, others willl say, still they get the job done.

The thing about Pernell Whitaker fights was not that they lacked action, for Whitaker threw plenty of leather, but it was that they were one sided and lacked drama.

Clinics can be good if you are a fan of the fighter putting on the clinic but if you want to see momentum shifts, both fighters getting hurt, both fighters red lining and going all out beating each other down where you don't know who'll crumble first, then Whitaker will seem boring because that never happened in any of his fights.

He basically made everything look easy and it rubbed some fans up the wrong way because it was like he was operating on cheat mode.

They would all have fans today. Sure not everyone would be a fan but they would all have a good amount of fans as well.

He wasnt popular though, i didnt watch boxing during his prime but i know people that did and the truth is that nobody cared about him. All the attention was on the heavyweights and chavez, after chavez it was de la hoya that got the attention.

Same thing with duran, he was popular, but compared to de le hoya and chavez, no they were far more popular than he was.

Most of whitaker's big fights were in his opponent's backyard. That should tell you that he never really had a big following at all.
