Hatton would be a nobody in an era with same day weigh in's. Domestic Welter at best.

    Collazo??

And surely the guys he fought at 140 were weighing in at the same time as Hatton?

You don't think he could have made European level Flea?

Cotto probably rehydrated up to a higher weight than hatton at 140, does the same apply?

....and Urango. Bottom line is the weigh in rules/ times were a level playing field.

I can't speak for the man himself but I don't think that was the point he was trying to make?

Honeyghan at his best was damn good. More elusive than he first appeared too. He would rip Hatton to pieces, he fought a few 140lbers and they all had one thing in common, they got stopped. He also beat a good few 147 and 154 champions . Hatton would be winning by a country mile until he got stopped inside 6

My point is that Hatton was an adept weight cutter who had a strength advantage over a lot of guys. Apart from Urango, I'm pretty sure he was the bigger man in the ring for all of his 140lb fights.

When he moved up to face guys cutting to make 147 (well, Collazo, Floyd is a natural Welter) he was less adept. Against a fighter of higher calibre than Collazo (who, let's be honest is a feather fist on the World stage) he'd not have made the final bell IMO.

Yeah, British level was harsh. But I also think if you match him up with Welterweights of era's past that weren't cutting the skill disparity between the two is shocking. When you consider Dave Green and John H. Stracey were the European level fighters of the time it's hard to envision Hatton doing all that much IMO.

Gaz is right, it's evened up by Hatton fighting other guys that are also cutting that would be in the same division as him with same day weigh-in's. But Hatton was also fighting lesser skilled weight cutters like himself. What I should've said was 'put Ricky in any other era and he would've been a nobody' :deal

Gaz, as someone even more well-versed on the old days than myself; surely you see there's been some serious technical regression over the past few years?

It's not just Ricky, Id say there are quite a few fighters nowdays that would be useless in most other boxing decades.

It doesn't matter what era of welterweights you match him up with. He was never a welterweight, could never mix with world class welterweights.

I dunno Flea, I see poorer fighters than I did in the 80s but I don't know how much of that is regression and how much is just that the 80s was a ****ing great time in boxing! Maybe a bit of both?

On Hatton, same day weigh ins. Fringe world class welter IMHO. To say domestic at best is a little disparaging mate!! Funny you should mention Dave Green, he was the example I was going to use as to Hattons probable level.

But he would have no chance of being healthy at ten stone weighing in on the same day is my point :good

Gaz, maybe you're right and I'm just being harsh. But it ain't just the 80s, it's f'n every era! :D

My pet "thing" is the number of fights these guys have. I can't see how you can be as rounded a fighter having fought 20 fights as you can having fought 50. A lot of fighters today are turning pro and fighting 4/5 times a year in there first couple of years. They should be out every 4-6 weeks!
