This is an interesting match-up but not necessarily a very interesting fight. Both men are strong counter-punchers with Quarry having the heavier hands and Young having the quicker ones. Some common oppents here also. Both handled Ron Lyle fairly easily. Quarry disposed of Shavers in 1 round while Young suffered a stoppage while still young and inexperienced. He came back and went the distance with Earnie later. A draw I think? So, let's take the Quarry who beat Lyle and Shavers and match him against the Young who beat Lyle and Foreman. How does this go? I would predict a decision win for Jimmy. He's taller, a longer reach and quicker. Probably not a great action fight though. No knockdowns or either fighter hurt.
Young torments and frustrates Quarry for most of the evening...dosen't get hit, does his thing, etc., ..probably gets the decision stolen from him.
Young is not much taller, and those who think he was a speed demon are going to be disappointed when they see Young on film. Quarry's hands in his prime were maybe even faster than Young's. Young's best stuff was he was hard to hit cleanly. Quarry had good speed, skills, a counter punch, and a much better work rate. I think the work rate here is the key, so I would pick Quarry to win via decision.
I can't find anything to disagree with in this post. Even the spelling is correct. I suspect it was ghosted.
Funnily enough,I did a thread on this one about a year ago. Good, competitive match up. Quarry would become the aggressor in this bout, and would take his share of scoring on the cards. Young's speedy counters would seize the day, though. Jimmy Young WUD 12 or 15.
In a time machine, Young of '76 beats Quarry of '70 on points in a 10 rounder..... Prolly like 7 to 3 over 10 rds...... MR.BILL
Young may not have been a speed demon, and his hand speed may have been lass than a young Quarry, but what Jimmy excelled in was sneakiness and timing..that and his elusive, safety first, survivalist defensive skills, would have made him a frustrating nightmare for Jerry Quarry.
At least...it would have been a painless, cut free, snoozer of a frustrating loss for Jerry. Monotonously so from round to round.
Young would diddledick around being cagey and let go an underwhelming amount of very nice counter punches and lose a decision to the understandably far more popular, more active fighter who had actual testicles. :yikes I guess that ridiculous 2012 prophecy isn't quite as ridiculous as I'd thought. I've got some **** to take care of, I guess, lads. :bolt
I like Young in this one, movement and sporadic flurry's and a solid defense allow Jimmy to take the nod....Jerry frustrated said bring on the big PUNCHING SLOW BOYS ...Foreman, Lyle, mac Foster,Shavers and Spencer
I like Jerry very much. But, to me at least, the outcome is very clear. The best Young gets a decision over the best Quarry.
