I'm not an expert or anything in fact I've only been boxing for about 10 months or so but I'll try to help. 1. Are there any other basic styles other than In Boxing and Out Boxing? Yes there are lots more! I'd say the main/basic ones would be in fighter and out fighter of course but also brawlers, swarmers and maybe and counter puncher if you want to add that. Although counter puncher isn't exactly basic. 2. For a Short Fighter like me (159cm & 49 Kg), What other than In-Boxing would be suitable? You could adopt a swarmer style, be a brawler or peek-a-boo. I'm not too sure on this as I haven't boxed long enough, nor have I fought yet. 3. What exactly is Counter Punching? Counter punching is basically where you attack your opponent immediately after(or while) he is throwing a punch. Typically you'll either slip the punch, duck under it, parry or shoulder roll to avoid your opponents punch because this leaves your hands free to fire a counter quickly. It is effective because you are exposing holes in your opponents guard and he is left unable to block it. 4. Can a Short Fighter be a effective Counter Puncher? Of course just look at Mike Tyson but blocking is probably more important for smaller guys(like me as well) unless you are really good at it like Mike Tyson was.
Train hard, learn to throw many punches without tiring easily. learn basics then worry about styles and strategy.
It doesn't mean you can't try to answer his question, he just wants to understand. Its not like if you answer him he'll just suddenly be rubbish.
hey thats just what ive heard by professionals. 1. Are there any other basic styles other than In Boxing and Out Boxing? Yeah, many basic aspects in describing a style but in and out position directly refers to how far you're comfortable standing in front of your opponent. This can change drastically depending who you're facing and the situation you're in. 2. For a Short Fighter like me (159cm & 49 Kg), What other than In-Boxing would be suitable? Short guys want to fight closer than normal to make up for the reach and size difference but from the outside a short man can use footwork, fitness and strategy to lead their opponent and control the pace of the fight. Better to have a low defensive stance when attacking taller men, with swooping bobbing and weaving motions to accentuate a smaller lower target and to disrupt his timing(and create yours). He will try to get at you coming in or stepping out the side so countering punches will probably be used against him here. 3. What exactly is Conter Punching? Not in lame man's term plz. basicallt it means to attack after your opponent has made the first move. It requires timing and speed, also technique. More often the smaller guys will move first because they have less chance of hitting a further target. BUT he will also throw at you first aswell, (likely a jab) so you will need to counter his shots as well if you can. 4. Can a Short Fighter be a effective Conter Puncher? Yeah definitely, there is usually a lot of action if the small guy can get in and be effective at attacking a taller guy. Fighting in close requires you to be able to react to his punches aswell as lead on your own. it also requires you to have a solid idea how to defend yourself.
As a short and stocky fighter that fights tall lean guys, YOU HAVE TO COUNTER PUNCH to get inside. If you don't counter punch they will 1,2 you to death. Watch Mike Tyson, Frazier, and Marvin Hagler and mimic their style against tall fighters.
and when you get inside. throw hard bombs dont take it easy, you may be taking alot of jabs to get inside.
The very first thing I would do is learn distance and range; stay out of range, but keep the distance short, so that you can get in off one move. A slip or a parry. You don't have to eat punches to get close. Watch Alberto Davila, Olivares, Ricardo Lopez (he was tall but really understood what we are talking about.) Buddy McGirt was great at getting close to tall guys without getting hit. Develope a plan. You can, and should, become very very adept at slipping jabs and countering off of them, but that will make a guy stop throwing them. So sometimes you may need to take a few jabs high on your head- and lean in so he thinks he's getting some- to make him throw the right hand or the hook. LaMotta, it was said, was very hard to hit with every punch other than the jab. Make that first punch count. When you slip and counter, get that first one right. The modern idea is to "punch in bunches" but when you are playing this game, that doesn't make sense. Land that first telling blow, while he is vulnerable, and leaning into it...then throw other punches. You may get tied up, he may move, whatever, so be sure of the first one. Maybe most important, there are two things. Boxing starts with your feet. Learn to move swiftly econmoically, and efficiently. Get in and get out:don't stay in and waste energy wrestling around and fighting for position. Create and opening, exploit it, then get out, or change the angle and keep punching. Finally, learn to feint. With your hands, shoulders, eyes, head, feet, knees, whatever. Learn to feint.
Thanks a lot guys for the responses. Great!! @greynotsoold, Thanks mate. Missing punches, I believe, I'm doing pretty Ok. I shall give importances to what you have mentioned here!!
1. Are there any other basic styles other than In Boxing and Out Boxing? Wow, Freddie what other styles could there be? Your either on the inside or your at range. There are different ways of approaching both though. 2. For a Short Fighter like me (159cm & 49 Kg), What other than In-Boxing would be suitable? It would be most effective for you to get up close and inside your opponents reach- i'd be more interested in fining out what is stopping you doing this? Why the need for alternatives. For a little guy Juan Diaz sets a fantastic template in my opinion. 3. What exactly is Conter Punching? Not in lame man's term plz. Different ways of doing it but it is basically looking for an opening based on your opponents mistakes. A lot of people counter punch without even realising theyre doing it. But to land a punch when your opponent is on balance and in the on-guard position is practically impossible. You need to commit to force them to fire back or the defence to become disorganised to create openings. 4. Can a Short Fighter be a effective Conter Puncher? Yes - Barrera wasn't massively tall,Don Curry, Diaz counter punched well, Naseem Hamed, up a level and look at the likes of pernell whitiker. If a taller fighter is using the jab well sometimes a counter can be the best course of action. For me its always been needs-must. I'm no superstar but I wouldn't want to pigeon hole myself to any particular style. Every fight I have I box completely different. Depends often who i've been studying in the build up. That of course has its own advantages and shortfalls. Thanks for asking my opinion.
Thanks a lot mate.. :good Just one follow up question.. 2 maybe.. >>what is stopping you doing this? I have been training for 6 months now and as you know I'm a flyweight. Yet to be in a fight.. But when I spar, which I do 6 sessions a week, my partners are always tall and big and my coach shouts at me to get in.. And when I get in things get real quick and I end up brawling. I have not got an chances to fight from a distance and I'm disappointed that I had to do it in a real fight if my opponent is shorter than me.. And moreover, when I spar in the absence of my coach I fight from a distance and I usually score good by slipping punches and then throw mine or by quickly getting on my back foot when I receive a jab and immediately followed by a front foot with my own 1 2 punches.. I really like that way of dealing.. I did not find a right person ask this question and hence to you as you are a coach yourself... To re-phrase, Should I cont. doing in fighting as my coach suggest or do I do it my way. Thanks again man, for the time and response.. P.S.: I respect my coach a lot and have a lot of faith in him but still this was bothering me a lot when I posted this question..
Aww shucks, now you're just trying to make me feel good! haha but thanks, I appreciate it. Glad to see you back.
