Ricky hattons the most underrated fighter and its down to the fact he was a white

Ricky Hatton was very skilled in the art of clinching.

 

I think Hatton was an excellent fighter and a brutal body snacther. His mistake was to go with Floyd sr for the Pacquaio fight.

The racism on this board is astonishing! WTF is "N*gger supremacist" and why is the phrase "white boy" more offensive. The term "boy" has deep roots and is offensive but the level outrage that people are showing absurd. It was like on another thread someone said something derogatory towards jews yet people were fixated on something said about a white fighter. Being mutli racial I find it amusing that it is the Anglos and the Slavics who are first talk about race.

I think he gets hated on too much by the general ESB population, but most of the technical boxing fans know he was a excellent fighter, top at 140, among p4p best in this era, and will probably go into hall of fame.

No such thing as a perfect fighter, and Mayweather and Pacquiao wouldn't be as well known if they didn't defeat fighters like Hatton.

Oh yeah, and why I think he gets hated on so much. I think it's a national and cultural thing. White fighters like Gatti and Ward are heavily praised, but they were also US citizens. Lennox Lewis in his day was also heavily criticized for fighting in a weak era just like the Klitchko's. From the cultural aspect, I notice US citizens to like slick defensive fighters over brawlers.

 

Yeah it is disturbing. The moderators haven't done crap to censor this type of language over the years.

 

He isn't overrated or underrated. He is looked at for what he is is.. a good brawler but a limited boxer who had ok success. Nowhere near the God UK made him out to be.

 

He was a very good fighter who just fell short at beating the best of his generation. Nothing to be ashamed about. He beat 2 great fighters past their best days in Tszyu and Castillo and other very good fighters like Collazo, Lazcano, and Malignaggi. Little a little bulldog always a good little scrapper.

 

What makes matters worse is that one of the moderators use these type of slurs

 

Cortez did Hatton a favour breaking them up early as Floyd was far better on the inside.

Hatton was a good fighter but never anything special,infact he was over rated because he was white.

 

Definately an underated fighter. Only lost to two of the best fighters of all time, and I don't say that statement lightly.

 

I think he was a very good fighter, but just not at the level of an ATG... when he faced two ATGs, this was made clear.

Isn't this how he is widely perceived? I know there are a few haters who think he was a bum, but I think the majority of boxers, writers, and fans view Ricky as a very good fighter with an impressive career (just not ATG). In this sense, I don't think he is underrated.

 

Ricky was a great guy who was wonderful for British (and maybe even) boxing(as a whole) but his greatest achievement was making a lot out of a little.He was very limited talent wise,but he managed to get the whole world talking about him and in the US,every top fighter from lightweight to welter was looking to fight him.
His place in history seems about right to me,a lovely guy who went a long way.
There are a few other champions who I wish had followed Ricky's example,foregoing a purse to have a career defining fight and get his name out there in a big way.
If Calzaghe had did this earlier,maybe his achievements would be unquestionable.

 

Hatton's biggest win came from having his country, his own pet ref and 3 judges all teamed against an aged Kostya Tszu. To add insult to the injury, they made the aging hall of famer go though a new, unprecedented weighting procedure, thanks to IBF and Hatton's connections. All in all, he was a decent guy but he was never anything great, he couldn't box and relied heavily on his superior physical strength and wrestling techniques vs guys at 140. I think he is ranke so high because he was a charming fella and a very friendly, funny guy all around, that somehow made people think (myself included) that he was better than he really was. It was wishful thinking, alas, as Collazo rightly showed Hatton's place.
