Prime Tyson with that speed and power and low centre of gravity, you re not gonna beat him stand up so you d have to try take him down where you face a massive risk getting caught on the way in and with that low centre of gravity very very difficult to take down.
I'm not sure some are quite comprehending just how high the level of wrestling is with some of these mma quys. You notice a ridiculous amount of difference from guys who wrestled at NCAA division 1 standard to NCCA division 2/3 and then you get guys like Sonnen and Couture who were alternates for the Olympics; just how much chance would any boxer with zero wrestling experience have against those guys?? Ask James Toney. Fact is the main reason Brits, although improving, are still behind the Americans/Brazilians in the MMA world is because our fighters struggle to defend a takedown. Paul Daley gets a ton of torque in his left hook- Koschek nuffilified him wrestling. So did GSP and Anthony Johnson to Paul Daley. These guys have had years of training and 30+ mma fights on top of extensive highest level achievements in kickboxing/muy thai/taekwondo etc And that's only looking at wrestling. BJ Penn got his nickname 'The Prodigy' for earning his BJJ black belt in 3 YEARS. So from day dot, these guys are way over 3 years away from reaching an acceptable level in these arts to compete in mma. You get a mma fighter known for his striking against a boxer the odds are levelled, see Ray Mercer starch Tim Sylvia. But as a rule of thumb boxers should stay away from mma coz I doubt Dana White'd be so willing to throw away another on a chancing boxer again
This in my opinion is like throwing a kick boxer into a boxing match. To a boxing fan he would look ridiculous from his stance to his punch form. In mma being just a boxer will most likely end with the boxer being on his back in the first 20 seconds as everything about a boxing stance plays into leg kicks and takedowns. Not to sure why people compare these against each other two very different sports. Like most things in MMA the fighters have taken the aspects of boxing and tweaked them to fit with MMA. As always there is a punchers chance but the other fighter would have to be pretty stupid (Big Tim) to try and out strike a boxer. Vic has a good background in wrestling but would take a while for him to tweak his boxing to fit but out of fighters today he would have the best chance which isn't a lot even at that. Cross_Trainer has a great thread of the history of MMA and mentions a lot of the early boxers who used Wrestling as part of the training as it often was used in boxing back then.
This isn't quite "apples to oranges" as some people claim. Boxing plays a role in MMA, and all sorts of fighters cross over into the sport. It's just as reasonable as asking "which judoka/wrestlers/kickboxers would do well in MMA?" Today, Darchinyan and perhaps Cintron. Of all time, Berlenbach, Jeffries, and Hodge would all qualify, among others.
Sherk never really tried to take him down. He was happy with boxing him, even tho he lost just about every exchange. The jab had no effect on Sherk's wrestling.
It's not a given that the MMA fighter would be killed there if he can move. Now if he's big and slow like Tim Sylvia, well, we know what happens. But if it's someone like Aldo, he's quick enough to get in with some leg kicks, and get out before he's killed. Also, once he lands a few leg kicks, that boxer is gonna be in some pain, and he's probably not gonna rely on a tight jab and a bunch of straights anymoe, he's gonna try to throw just as many bombs as the mma fighter, because he knows he's gonna end it, and end it quickly before he is dead in the water. And once he does that, he can leave himself open for other attacks, like knees. So if a fast mma fighter will a good muay thai background stands, it doesn't totally mean they will be killed, they would just have to fight very smart.
Different sports. Any big puncher with a decent chin and some kind of grappling background who was young enough to have time to learn the art would have a chance. Donaire or someone else young with speed (feet and hands) and power.
Like Junior I think Vic Darchinyan could succeed primarily on his hand striking skills. But he has trained at wrestling from a young age too apparently and could prove a real handful in MMA.
