Geralds trainer looked a complete idiot last night but is he really to blame?? It would be good if people state exactly what they thought he done wrong??? I think of it like this, John Murray took a beating at the weekend, was never realistically in the fight and could of quite easily suffered serious injury yet no one has really slagged Joe Gallagher off for not pulling him out. But Gerald was apparently in front on the scorecards, was very much in the fight and had hurt Benn badly in the fight. How many trainers would of truthfully pulled Gerald out?? Now if there was any signs that Gerald was suffering brain injury etc in that fight i would expect the 3 doctors at ringside to spot it.
But for the record the trainer is still a twat!!!

get what your saying McClellan was in the lead according to the judges score cards.

then again in 1975 a man called Eddie Futch pulled out Joe Frazier prior to the last round with knowledge that his charge had a chance of winning the world title again...that took guts.

The other thing there was another doctor at ringside that night London and he was doing commentary for American tv - Ferdie Pacheco.

When the steroid accusations at Benn came up i couldn't help thinking their might be some truth in it..After all, Benn admitted he was a lyer and a cheat back then and he was also best mates with Tony Tucker and Carton leach , both massive steroid users and all round wannabe gangster ****s..

Avoiding a drugs test because he fainted after the fight only adds to the accusations. I know the trainer was a weird bastad but maybe he was right about this one???

That’s not always true – they don’t know the fighter. There’s a lot of after-the-fact wisdom regarding that fight. It wasn’t his trainer’s fault because he was incompetent. That was clear just from looking at him in training (and actually why I’ve always distrusted Kevin Mitchell’s account of Gerald’s savagery in War, Baby – he’s the only source for a lot of it).

It wasn’t the referee’s fault because he doesn’t know the fighter and, other than the mouthpiece thing, he never looked in distress until the knock downs.

The doctors, as soon as they got involved, did a brilliant job. It’s due to them that the man is even alive. They could have done a better job if McClellan’s family hadn’t been desperate to get him back to the US.

Boxing is a dangerous sport and every man must be responsible for the choice he makes. Unfortunately, some “fans” feel that surrender is cowardly. That sadly means fighters take undue punishment out of a misplaced sense of machismo that said fans would never live up to themselves.

Oh come on… that’s absolutely ridiculous. He fainted because he’d taken a ferocious beating and was exhausted from the sheer effort. You’re telling me that douchebag of a trainer found an old boot with Benn’s blood (unverified in itself) and went to the expense of getting it tested but never bothered to keep the report?

    Yeah, how reliable!

I'm not blaming the doctors, I'm not blaming anyone. What I mean is that it couldn't of been obvious otherwise the doctors would of seen it.

Many fighters have been like that though, Grant. Some couldn't bear to see Gerald like that because it would've effected them so much.

Donnie Penelton and Martyx Stamps said the same thing too. Why would they lie about what was happening to Gerald in sparring sessions.

Watching that last night was like a big flashback, I can remember watching that fight with my mum and dad (I was only 14 at the time) me an my mum were shouting at the telly willing benn on I can still remember my dad going "that bloke ain't right he shouldn't be twitching like that" but at the time I just wanted benn to win and wasn't even thinking about the other bloke, sad stuff though the outcome. One thing I had forgotten about was that trainer of geralds with that stupid cap on and last night showed was an idiot that man is.

To be fair, whether the trainer is a lying **** or not, I got the impression Benn was being dishonest on the subject of steroids.

He seemed to protest too much. I'm absolutely prepared to be laughed off as there's **** all evidence for such a claim, but that was my gut feeling when watching him speak on the claim. I just got the impression he was very awkward, maybe protesting too much.

No logic behind it, just a gut feeling. Maybe I ate a dodgy kebab

    Posted this in another thread:

Anybody think there is anything in the Benn steroid accusations. Benn did put qualifiers on soem of his statements. Such as " I never took steroids for the Gerald Mclellan fight" and "I never took steroids during my boxing career"

Benn did used to hang around with Carlton Leach and Tony Tucker who walked him to the ring that night I think im right in saying and they were notorious steroid users. He would have had pretty easy and direct access to them.

here is a pic of them together:

This is how these things start. Couple of years from now it's gonna become 'fact' that Benn took steroids, because it's been said so many times. It's the herd mentality. Let's dead this now.

I dont think Benn took steroids there was no need for him to at all. They are baseless accusations. I was posting the picture out of interest rather than to make a point.

I agree. I am much more concerned about the supposed sessions he had with Paul McKenna (spelling) before the fight. What they were working on seemed very dangerous to me.
