Why has there never really been a GOOD Australian boxer?

And before people jump in, Kosta Tzoo doesn't count - he wasn't ethnically Australian, he was of Russian, Korean and Mongol descent. I'm talking about a pure Australian fighter.

It seems odd to me that Australia has never really been able to make a mark at world level. When you think about it, boxing has always been a working class sport. Yet here we have a country which evolved from the absolute dregs of the British working class - the thugs, rapists and murderers who were shipped out to live on this huge uninhabited island, left with nothing to do but reproduce and populate it.

Bad genes mixing with bad genes - you would think these would be the perfect conditions to create a wealth of great fighting machine. But instead Australia flowered into a reasonably well functioning society, and the best fighters it managed to produce are Michael Katsidis and Billy Dibb.

Do any of you guys know why Australia has never really had a presence on the world boxing stage?

Does it just not have the boxing infrastructure in place?

Is it like in America where the best athletes are going into other sports?

How do you think Steve Irwin with 6 months training would have fared against a prime Ricky Hatton?s

This is an unrelated phenomenon, but from a sociological standpoint the culture places a premium on integrity on sports... as in the use of PEDs is seen as very vile. I remember reading the psychological implications of how this attitude of integrity, had not just direct effects on sports, but also on business success as well. It was a peer reviewed article I read a few years ago, and it was very interesting.

Good question though... You would think Australia would be churning out Duran's left and right... due to the ruggedness of that culture.

:blood He's descended from Aborigines. He's about as 'ethnically Australian' as it gets.

You'll have to speak to the Adamek fans about this, they're much better at understanding this ethnicity stuff.
