Pacquiao: Floyd deal 80-90 percent done, Cotto rematch possible too

At a recent gathering of journalists in the Philippines, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has stated that a deal to fight WBC belt holder Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a massive unification fight was close to being reached.


The 32 year-old, who took another tight points win from Juan Manuel Marquez last month, told The Philippine Star and the waiting press that the nature of his win against Marquez was probably the catalyst to Mayweather pursuing the bout for 2012.


He also said that the contest was 80 or 90 per cent sure to take place on May 5th and even checked the calendar on his phone to see if the date was a Saturday, along with mentioning a 50-50 purse split.


Another admission from the ‘Pacman’ was the lure of a potential rematch with WBA light-middleweight champion Miguel Cotto post-Mayweather, following Cotto’s impressive win over Antonio Margarito at Madison Square Garden.


The Filipino Congressman scored a twelfth round stoppage win over a less-rounded ‘Junito’ in 2009 and as the Margarito fight clearly showed, the Puerto Rican is a much improved fighter since then meaning a rematch would be a huge seller.


I don’t think Pacquiao would be foolish enough to look past Mayweather but I personally feel, and maybe he does, that a return with either Cotto or Marquez is workable whatever the result against the ‘Money’ man.

It means **** all until the first bell rings. I don't think there's many fans that think this fight will ACTUALLY happen, and more to the point, as it has been an ongoing saga for so long, i feel there are a number of fans who don't even give a ****.

 

The hype for this fight will go into over-drive

There's the ongoing battle of wills between Mayweather and Arum, which is frankly pathetic on both sides really.

Firstly Arum makes his money off Pacquiao, and he could fight any bum you want and still make mega money.

Secondly Mayweather makes his money off himself, and could fight any bum you want and still make mega money.

One of them is nearly 80 and the other is in his mid-30's, you'd think they'd just grow up and start behaving like adults.

I still think the most likely occurence is a 4th Marquez fight, Arum obviously promotes more than his fair share of Mexican fighters and will be under pressure to deliver this, I feel.

Actually he's under pressure to deliver both, but obviously his like and respect for Marquez allied to the opposite feelings for Floyd will see him look to tread this path.

Meanwhile Roach is desperate for another crack at Mayweather before he has to call it a day as a trainer, which surely won't be in the too distant future.

Either way Arum is going to come out of it looking like a ****, but you reap what you sow.
