Sure he pushed but its not that bad really to warrant a point deduction in the decisive 12th round . Referee was constantly shouting at Khan from the get go if you watch the fight again. Having said that, Khan needs to use effective footwork to make space for himself rather than just pushing. The referee wanted to be the deciding factor rather than the fighters. Some could make a video clip of a Wladimir Klitschko and many other fighters, with all the holding, and pushing to call for several point deductions too.
Watched the fight again yesterday and noted that Joe Cooper warned Peterson in 8 different rounds to keep his head up!
Seeing a lot of posts in differing threads saying 'that sorta stuff happens in fights all time'. Reminds me of football when players drag down attackers in penalty area from set pieces and ref's bottle it. If ref's were consistent and applied the rules it would stop it happening but they bottle it 9/10. Joe Cooper ref'd the fight extremely well and i just wish other ref's would follow suit. Sadly won't happen and likes of Khan will continue to get away with tactical holding/pushing.
He reffed the fight extremely badly. Appeared biased as hell. That deduction in the last round had wonderful timing. However I take your point on consistency with the refs. There's very little and often such a gray area.
It IS against the rules and he WAS warned constantly. That was the issue not whether you consider the rule to be silly or not. He just needed to stop doing it and he'd have been fine. But he didn't, so he got penalised. It really was Khan's own fault.
You'd should look at yesterday's Independent and the column today for the pushing, ref and so-called scandal reality. Some of the British papers have been certifiably mad with their coverage. Adios.
So what?? That's not Amir Khan doing that is it? Is he from D.C? No, was he pushing the guys head away for best part of 9 rounds No. That pushing from Khan opened a cut in Petetson's head didn't you see? Ref had to take 2 points off for that, it's only fair.
I wish this guy reffed the Maidana fight where Khan was doing this **** again. I don't even think Cortez gave him a warning yet took a point from Maidana for a single elbow. No doubt GBP will target a Vegas rematch with old Joe reffing.:-(
Also, if Khan stops that illegal pushing, he gets hit a whole lot more, which may well have lost him those rounds anyway, in fact possibly more than two points.
Watched it too. Load of CGI bollocks, more a remake than a sequel, leave Carpenter alone!!! They even had to chuck in a good looking chick in for no reason! Khan should of been smart enough to listen to the ref though, hitting on the break was the worst part.
Yes, take away the pushes and Peterson is on him like glue, smacking him around the head like he often did for much of the fight, after a few of those is Khan still really winning those rounds? There's one reason Khan was fouling in that way, it was to get Peterson off him and stop shipping even more punches, punches which would have swung a round into his opponents favour. If done in a subtle manner rough house tactics are one thing, in a way they have an entertainment value, but blatant pushing away like that is not something I wish to watch or encourage in the game. It's not just Khan either, there's a load of them in the game today who need the book thrown at them. Sadly however, people are victimising the referee for enforcing the rules he's put there to enforce. Unbelievable.
innocent little peterson..you can can see khans head rock back from the force of peterson ducking low and bringing his head up into khans mouth ..Khan pushes him off and the ref takes a point off khan. ..that was a bit biased but still hope Khan appreciates that no amount of bad reffing should have cost him the fight if he was as good as he thinks he his. Hope they can find someone to teach him an inside game.
It's a shame Khan has no inside game, and fighters have to bull into him to get success, because they know they have no chance from the outside because Khan is just too fast. I don't think any fighter from the outside can beat Khan. If Roach can't teach Khan to fight or slip/coast on the inside then maybe it's time to part, getting hit on the ropes is not skill, it's poor defence.
