I'm a bit confused here... isn't a guy getting concussed pretty much a typical knockout we see in Boxing? If that's the case, then 2 years to recover is a bit excessive. Now he has noone to really fight, no names to collect or glory to be had.
He still getting paid on a per fight basis. If he doesn't fight, he doesn't get paid. How the hell is dropping out of the tournament without medical documentation going to land him a fight with Bute? It's pretty well known that Bute is only interested in setups until he can get the Super 6 tourney winner. He would have no reason to pursue a fight with Dirrell. Dirrell didn't even start training again until over a year after that Abraham fight. That should tell you a lot right there.
I'm of the opinion thought that if he did fake it, it wasn't because of having to fight Ward. He had to understand when signing up for the S6 that he would have to fight him at some point.
You are confused. No two concussions are alike. Concussion is actually a pretty broad term. it's not like a cut, or a torn ACL, where the recovery time is relatively standard. There have been athletes that have been sidelined for over a year due to a concussion.
Thanks for the clarification... but still. 2 years? It's still a very long time for the hit which all agree didn't look that bad. The most evidence we have that it was bad is his time away from the ring. That's where all this speculation comes from. If Paul Williams took 2 years off after his KO against Martinez we'd all understand very plainly why he needed 2 years off. But the Dirrell hit is a little suspect.
It's irrelevant because they can't "prove" that he "couldn't" fight on they will still keep him around to make them a little money, besides I said I don't think it was that serious, never said he fake it totally, I'm sure he did have a doctor's excuse, Troy Aikman was the king of concussions, he had at least ten throughout his career but never need two years off, but hey I can't say I really care as I'm not a dirrell fan and I'm skeptical about how bad he was hurt...
If he has a contract for a certain number of fights, he may just be playing the long game, knowing he will get his paydays. I'm not convinced of this, and I do know how debilitating concussions can be. But, IIRC, after the AA fight, there really wasn't alot of information coming out. It may seem otherwise, but I'm not a hard sell on this. I genuinely have nothing against Dirrell. I thought the AA fight was gonna be his coming out party. I hope he isn't too rusty and can show the promise he had before.
It hasn't been 2 years. It's been 21 months. Also keep in mind that he's been trying to get a fight since August. He's probably been able to resume training since around June or July. So that's about 15 or 16 months. There have been athletes who have been out that long with concussions. Again, why would he voluntarily sit on the sidelines if he was ok? It's not like he was making a ton of money.
Well you are right, a concussion doesn't take 21 months to heal... Arguably the most naturally gifted of them all. ANd he did beat Froch, and got jobbed, then the thing with AA. Maybe needed a lot of time off? Look at Big George--what did he take 10 or more years off?
White Euro's hate Dirrell and Ward. They thought they were superior, and found out that Black Americans are still the dominant athletes on the planet.
this and muther****ers love to hate on slick black fighters. dirrell had a good chance of being in the final, he showed he could beat Froch if he steps on the gas a bit more (i though he won anyways). People forget this was Dirrell's very first worldclass opponent and it was a complete beast in Carl Froch and although he fought negatively much of the fight, he landed the cleaner blows and you can chalk that tentativeness up to him fighting a worldclass opponent for the fist time and not just any opponent, iron chinned power puncher Froch. Dirrell went and fought him in his backyard and arguably should have won. He showed he easily has what it takes to convincingly beat Froch in a rematch in America.
I thought Dirrell was faking it against AA when I saw it live, but you're right it would make no sense
Dirrell didn't fake it to get out of the Ward fight. He was simply carried away in his own thread of lies. Boxing mixed with medical facts: 1) Dirrell was winning the fight against Abraham on points until the "event" 2) Dirrell seemed to run all over the ring, especially later in the fight 3) Dirrell was very, very respectful with Abraham's power 4) In the later rounds Abraham was turning the heat 5) Dirrell knew that Abraham is looking for a KO, as that was his only chance 6) Dirrell got a punch while he was down 7) In that very instant he decided it was better to fake it as he will surely get the win by DQ 8.) Remaining on the canvas he knew that he has to go all the way till the end with the fake 9) He started crying and talking nonsense; but not a brain-damaged person nonsense but childish nonsense 10) Hours after the fight he knew that there is no way to turn back 11) If Dirrell were to say: "Man, that was nothing serious, I can fight right now" => everybody would say: **** Dirrell, he was faking it. 12) Dirrell's only option was to say he got seriously injured 13) The only injury that could have occurred, after seeing the tape is a head injury (a claim of a knee, elbow or toe injury would have been non-realistic). 14) The head itself had no visible marks so it had to be inside his head 15) Inside his head there is supposed to be a brain 16) 15, therefore a brain injury 17) Brain injury doesn't have a cure, especially over such a short period Finally, some common sense facts: 1) Preposterous to believe that people close to Dirrell (family) would let him fight again knowing that he is vulnerable; no one wants a dear friend/husband/child in a wheelchair, mumbling 2) Body language after Abraham hit him while he was down and at his interviews after that says that he lied 3) If there is a majority of people that say Dirrell was faking it, it should at least occur to you that something was fishy there. People talk about what they saw, not imaginary/non-material stuff (like gods, angels etc.) 4) PEOPLE WITH ANY FORM OF BRAIN DAMAGE SHOULD NEVER, NEVER, NEVER FIGHT AGAIN; There should be a law for that if you ask me So this is my take: Dirrell got carried away by a split second decision that he took and had to go all the way after that. He probably regret that decision when it was too late. We see this all the time all around us, even from people close to us, but somehow we decide that boxers aren't humans and they can never pull this kind of stuff. ...Wrong!
