im far from a hater, but the general consensus(atleast it "seems" to me) is Manny Pacquiao struggles against backpeddlers(marquez and suppossedly mosley) = one-dimensional. Juan Manuel Marquez struggles with anyone who doesn't charge at him(norwood, john, barrera, mayweather etc) = one of the most adaptable and clever minds of our time. Is this right?

Boxing fans rate defense higher than offense, defense is brilliant technical stuff while offense is wild stupid brawling ko waiting to happen stuff.

Lol.. Marquez is an elite counter puncher, but he needs to have a great puncher in front of him to really shine. Stylistically he doesn't match up well with a great defensive fighter.

His adjustments are some of the most dramatic in boxing, he's very adaptive. Fighting Floyd at 144 poorly conditioned doesn't say about his general skills P4P against defensive boxers. In his early days, for fear of getting robbed, he avoided getting hit far too much, and despite most thinking he did enough to win against the likes of John and Norwood, he lost. I believe the Marquez we saw fighting at super-featherweight or lightweight would show more offensive variety. You saw the elments of his offensive adaptations against Barrera, who was out-boxing him defensively at some points before the tide started to turn more. He's a counter-puncher primarily, so of course he's not as offensive, but he can adapt going forwards by knowing what punches to throw in the latter half of a fight, and finds the weaknesses even better going backwards and ad******g to his opponent's rhythm He's faced some pretty diverse sets of offense 135 and below and figured basically all of them out by the end.

Pacquiao had problems against Mosley because Mosley circled to his right, but didn't risk any exchanges past the 3rd. Marquez uses his footwork to set up his counters, but lots of times it's a lateral pivot or a slip well within range. Floyd is more of a fighter who measures distance, and really doesn't backpedal unless he's jogging to regain the enter of the ring. If you back him up in a straight line, he'll almost always figure out your distance and start to time you, but he'll almost never bounce on his toes and use the whole ring.

Except, he didn't really struggle with 2 of those fighters you mentioned. John and Norwood? Please. You know the deal there. And Mayweather was well over 150 pounds on the night of the fight (Paid Juan an extra 600,000 for the privilage too). Plus, you know, he's the best fighter on the planet. Those two factors would make anyone struggle against him.

JMM absolutely is one of the most intelligent and technically brilliant boxers of this current generation, there's no doubt about that.

Everyone is an boxing expert. You guys talk about every fighter like if u knew them . Counter puncher , straight forward , circles the ring blah blah. Blah. Just because you watch the fights on tv drinking your beer doesn't make u an expert. Pacquiao is not exposed , mayweather is not scare and khan is not over rated. At least they are doing so
    Something with their life's.

Neither Pacquiao or Marquez have exceptional front-foot footwork in my opinion. They're not at their very best when forced to track somebody down or cut off the ring.

people used to think Pac can't fight backing up. lol. It's true that Pac's style is not as effective against someone who refuses to engage. It's still effective enough to bank him rounds.

the point is not whether or not he won, just that he had tough, very close fights

and backpeddler isn't to degrade marquez, just another way of saying he was on the backfoot, why are you getting offended? it's part of boxing, im not saying he's a runner
