I think the profile of British boxing internally is on the rise. Two years ago my friends who are causal boxing fans and happy to watch it if we are all getting together for a few drinks, would only be interested in the British fighters fighting on an international level, the likes of Haye and Khan. Now they will happy watch Fury, Chisora, Clev , Groves , DeGale and many more. I am not sure if its just the people i know but i think a lot more general sports fans in the UK are rekindling an intrest in boxing.
True...in terms of revenues and attendances...British boxing is definitely alive and well... What we were discussing was actually the lack of up and coming world-class British Boxing Talent. We talked about all the prospects on the verge ; Brook, Groves, DeGale, Fury + more. I think maybe to use the word dead is an exaggeration, but it is a real issue. Do you see any of the upcoming British fighters being able to mix it up with the best in their division??? We talked about how Brook would do against guys like Ortiz, Fury against Povetkin, Groves against any of the S6 fighters etc etc and the consensus seems to be that...all our best prospects don't seem as technically good as some of their counterparts overseas. Its jst opinion. It was a lively discussion...we do this every week. Not intended to undermine British boxing, just callin it hw we see it
....and oh yea genuinely forgot about Cleverly...he might be our only champ after Sat but does anyone give him a chance against the best in the division Dawson and Hopkins...or even the level jst below that (Pascal, cloud etc). I'd say he has a chance against Pascal and maybe Cloud (whose inactivity isnt helpin) but Dawson & Hopkins??? No Way !!! This was the whole point of discussion, there are plenty of good British fighters, but they seem too far off elite level. (Now that Haye's retired) Only Froch and maybe Khan (at 140, donno hw he'd do @ 147) seem to have a shot against some elite fighters. Shouldnt we have more fighters on that level ??
If the word dying is an exageration then why use it? I know because the question is British Boxing at elite level likely to go through a lean period? wont get as much attention :-(
don't have to have loads of world champions to have great boxers, that many world titles around now,its been watered down somewhat.
No. As long as the traditional route is followed and it keeps producing world champions, it isn't dead. The domestic scene will always thrive in small halls, on Sky, the odd great rivalry etc
To the general public it might be. The amount of people I've asked if they are watching Ward v Kessler and nobody knowing it's on!!!! Wish ITV showed fights again
