Can you think of any fighters at heavyweight or otherwise, who seemed to have successfully replicated Joe Louis's combination punching ability? Personally, I can't think of any.

Funny, I saw this thread out of the corner of my eye and thought it said, "Which fighters of the last 60 years do you think came closest to emasculating Joe Louis". Naturally my thought was Tyson, would would stomp on Louis' testicles, if not bite them clean off.

Could very well be the case.

I think Louis influenced in some way just about every fighter that watched him and idolized him. Even if they did have a similar style. Louis was the preeminent american sports hero for millions of people spanning many generations. I know he was idolized by Robinson, Marciano, Liston, Frazier, Foreman, Tyson and Holyfield among others.

Not exacly, but Bob Foster at light heavy, or Julian Jackson at middle can be mentioned. Foster and Jackson were big right hand punchers with jabs. They were also prone to knock downs vs punchers.

I think that Alexis Arguello was rather like Louis.

Thats a good pick. Arguello like Louis was slow footed but had awesome punching power and perfect technique, a wide variety of punches. But i think Louis had faster hands than Arguello though although they are very much alike i believe in terms of there style.

Agreed. Good call. Better than Foster or Jackson, though I do think Foster and Jackson are not bad picks.

In terms of mannerisms and movements; Carlos Ortiz.

Not in terms of style but in complete arsenal of every punch and able to generate serious power Wilfredo Gomez. Alexis Arguello comes to closest style wise

For heavyweights: Sonny Liston and Lennox Lewis. But obviously there are a lot of differences between those and Louis. Joe was more aggressive than Lennox and had much faster hands than Liston.

A more interesting question would be:

Which fighters of the 60 years presceding Louis do you think came closest to emulating him?

Does any1 think that Trinidad was similar at times , both didnt really dancewith their feet , but did cirle their oponents and jab , both believed in their power and would wait for an opening , and both are imo the 2 best finishers ever . I supose they went about their infighting differently though , Louis was a bit more patient and would use uppercuts more , where Trinidad would go more for the left hook and a long right if there was a bit of distance . Still some similarities though

Kostya Zoo is some ways reminded med of Louis.

The rather slow feet planted for good power, very precise with his punches and doesnt waste much energy throwing pitty pat punches, the booming straight short right hand lead.
