He's never lost a fight with Burns as his trainer, he's never gassed with Burns in his corner, and he utilized his best weapon (his Jab) most efficiently with Burns in his corner. He directed him to the undisputed MW championship and two wins over one of the greatest fighters of this era, no idea how you arrive at this conclusion. Yes he's back with Pat, finally.
Well the man that made him good when he was at his best was Ozell Nelson.Pat was just the reason to go back and party at South Beach , he is done now party time and time to keep loosing big fights is back.
I've had a battle with Burns myself way back when, he's a total ******* (and I mean total), he's also a former dirty cop who was canned. He's all of the above but the ****er does know how to train, I'll give the ******* that.
To be honest, Burns had him back to the basics with his jab and his practice fight looked good. At times the announcers were questioning his right hands health, I think Burns even asked him. What was going on though, was Jermaine was challenging himself at times to beat on that club fighting kid with 1 hand to make it more even. When he was doing that, I was impressed. It showed me he was there to work hard on his game and not to go for the quick night. He could have went the other way with this kid and powered him out much earlier...though the kid was tough. I think he wanted the rounds and also wanted some other guys to think that maybe he isn't carrying as much power. The big screw up in the fight was the jab he threw flagrantly after the bell. That was stupid and if the kid had responded and made it a brawl...that would be a DQ win for the kid. Taylor could have given that away. When with Manny, he was ultra cocky and Manny was giving a guy of his limitations bad advice about trying to crowd please. Jermaine has always been a nervous fighter and he has always gotten tired late because of it. He is not a guy who you want to send out to try and impress the crowd late. You want him to start hot and then run late. He was so close to some big wins and he could have ran and even taken a knee when hurt late and won another couple of those fights. Winning is the most important thing, crowd pleasing is 2nd. It makes sense with a guy like Wlad who has dominated all night against a guy like Chambers who can't really get to him. But with Jermaine, he has to work hard all night long and if he is ahead at the end of fights, he should be in evasive mode late. He doesn't have the same advantages as Wlad in the ring. Wlad can relax all night long in many of his fights. I think Steward messed with him on that. Screw the crowd pleasing, his style is pleasing enough as it is. When you have a victory secured, bottle that **** up. Especially after you have demonstrated repeatedly that you are much more vulnerable late in fights. At 161, he looked pretty good int he ring. If he can make MW again, and do it comfortably, I think he can win the MW Title again. But, since he is older and dropping down in weight again, I think it is even more important for him to bottle it late when he has a fights sewn up against a good puncher. Instead of having a guy try shifting him to another gear to impress, I hope Burns will shift him into a safer gear where he evades like Cotto or Yuri Foreman at times. He's a damn good fighter going away from guys. With his jab clicking strong again, he should be going away late all the time. He can look phenomenal and win rounds going away. No need for bravado at all with this guy.
If Taylor can find that right hand he used to have then he is going to be a beast-he also needs to get some "reflex" back.
Isn't it Nelson that gave him the bad advice in the 12th that led to the loss against Froch? Probably the same trainer for Abraham, but OH well, we know the extent of your knowledge on the subject now. :yep
I respect Ozell Nelson, but he's not a world class trainer. He's a good man, and has been good to Jermain, but he has no business training Jermain on this level. Jermain lost 3 fights with with Ozell in his corner.
How you feelin' about the move back to 160? I mean he looked pretty damn good the other night, but he was easy levels above that dude he was fighting. IF he can make 160 comfy and healthy he should be able to reclaim his throne. (ps. Is DiBella still his promoter?)
