Can GSP beat Nick Diaz after an 18-month lay-off?

If both guys came at peak fitness and sharpness, both with a lot of confidence and momentum behind them, I'd expect this to be a dominant win for GSP.

But time after time after time, we see guys come back from long lay-offs due to injury or surgery or illness, and look rusty, sluggish, tentative, tired, toothless, etc etc.

And someone with the aggression, determination, relentlessness, and viciousness of Nick Diaz is exactly what you DON'T want to face coming off an 18-month lay-off.

The guy has a great chin and great sub defence, so he isn't likely to get finished. In addition to that, he's a cardio machine, so you're going to have to fight him relentlessly for the whole five rounds.

And then comes the pressure, the punches, and the mental toll of facing him.

Is everything playing into Diaz's hands for this one, or will GSP's wrestling and all-round quality still mean the fight goes in his favour?

(this is assuming Diaz beats Condit of course, but I really believe he will) :D

I think Nick beats GSP no matter how fresh GSP is but thats just my opinion.

The lay-off won`t be a huge factor, if at all IMO, GSP is safety first & won`t come in anything less than 100%, especially as Nick Diaz will be the toughest fight in his career.

I`d make GSP a favourite over any WW in a 3 round fight & a favourite over anyone outside of Nick Diaz in a 5 round fight, I give this fight a 50/50 & since I like Diaz much better will be picking him, lay-off or no lay-off.

I think he beats GSP on the feet as his boxing is better, he is a harder puncher & throws & lands more, I don`t think Nick can stop the TD but I think he is the best BJJ player from his back that GSP has ever fought, Diaz will constantly make him work to defend by going for subs, throwing punches & elbows & therefore neutralize GSP`s gnp from inside the gaurd that he used on Penn & Serra so well, Diaz is naturally bigger than BJ & Serra too, has arguably the best cardio in all of MMA, will not fold mentally & will keep coming til the very end trying not to survive or even outpoint Georges but beat & finish him.

This will be a very long, competitive fight barring an early TKO or sub which if anything is more likely to be achieved by Diaz than GSP..... this will be a great fight regardless of who wins IMO.

Well, we've seen some poor returns this year: Shogun, Brock and Velasquez were all crushed when they came back. But I think Georges will avoid their fate. He's always been very scientific about his training and conditioning, and his will to be the best is second to none. He won't be back until he knows for sure he's 100%.

I'd be surprised if GSP lost to Diaz, this is very favourable stylistic match-up for him. He'll put Nick on his back for twenty five minutes and win every round.

You got to give the Diaz bro's credit. Their fearless approach to fighting makes their hands very effective. While others are thinking "I must shoot for a double", they are punching you in the face. There can also be no doubt that the Diaz bro's can be wrestle ****ed. If Diaz can shut down GSPs wrestling then he is in trouble.

In terms of preparation, I think GSP will prepare with strikers/jits as good or better than Diaz but Diaz won't necessarily spar with better wrestlers than GSP. Shields has good wrestling when he gets a hold of you but his shot isn't comparable.

Sums it up pretty much perfectly.

If Diaz beats Condit, he really couldn't ask for more favourable conditions to beat GSP.

Diaz is also the most aggressive fighter that GSP has ever face, and he'll be fighting for the finish from everywhere. It'll be a tough fight, but GSP will get the win.

People go on about Diaz's subs off his back but he sure didn't sub Sherk, Sanchez, Parisian or the great Joe Riggs off his back. Also, his gogoplotta on Gomi is looking more and more meaningless the more Gomi fights and looks small and out of sorts. GSP wasn't ever in danger of being subbed by BJ Penn for the six rounds he was on top of him and passed his guard with ease. I think GSP sits in side mount the whole fight and wins a clear victory. People take Diaz's mugging and fearlessness too seriously. GSP is the better MMA fighter
