if Louis thought that a 6ft.0 190 lbs washed up Schmeling punched hard, then he would be up for a nasty surprise against a modern HW.

i agree, now Louis legacy wise and all time placement wise is not over rated but some may over rate him head to head

when I look a mythical match-ups i do not transport those old fighters to today, rather the reverse. I imagine how the mordern fighter would do in the past under their conditions, 15 rounds, monthly defenses, part-time jobs on the side, not the same training and nutrition programs, social conditions . . . etc. This is all a game of pure speculation after all, Most of today's fighters are coddled and never had to fight to literally put food on the table that month.i do not think most of the top fighters today would be as highly rated under those conditions.

    Today's HW's are over-rated IMO.

Not at the time of the knockout. If you've watched the fight, ( you probably havent) Schmeling hit Louis with a small upercut, Louis seen the right hand coming and droped to his knees without geting hit, then rolled over on his belly and quit.....

Joe Louis fought guys weighing over 230 pounds 5 times and none of those fights lasted the distance

  14. I hate inter-generational boxing talk, how can you compare fighters where boxing methods, training methods and what is considered "technically sound" differs so much?

Louis was the very first top heavyweight to even incorporate combination punching, and it was revolutionary. Yet if you're honest with yourself, the practice has been improved upon by fighters today that will achieve a lot less.

    It's like comparing a 1930s Mercedes-Benz to a 2000s BMW.
