Unbelievable chin, def a 9.5 at least. Always amazed me that vander dropped him but thats a testament to the fighter holy is. Check out the uppercut-left hook combo Morrison hits him with at 4:54 :

One of the best Heavyweight chins without a doubt. And also one of the more devastating hitters. Good fighter.

Why do you think so, Flea?

Never considered Mercer a devastating hitter.

    Good power, nothing more.

Just the aesthetics of some of his K.Os. Admittedly, most against lesser talents (and Tommy Morrison ;-)) but although I think he wasn't always in the greatest of shape he was a very hard puncher, and had the chin to hit and hurt without worrying about what came back his way. I think Lennox had a good chin, so despite Mercer landing his fair share of leather there and not doing all too much to Lewis, I wouldn't consider that a black mark either. Maybe devastating was the wrong word, but I'd say he was definitely a very hard puncher and a kayo puncher.

He had Larry on wobbly legs with a jab!

PRIME Raymond Mercer had a Top 5 Cast-Iron Cheen @Heavyweight.

Watching Ray walk right into Haymaker-NUKES from Morrison, Lewis & Spoon proves it. :!:

    Aye m8. :thumbsup

You just gave me a mint idea too -

What if Lewis-Mercer And Foreman-Chuvalo were switched about to be Lewis-Chuvalo And Foreman-Mercer??

Would Chuvalo go teh distance with Lenny?

Would Mercer hear teh final bell against Big George? :think

Chuvalo would manage the distance against Lennox, but lose heavily on points.

Mercer would put up a brave fight against the 1973/74 George, but would soak up too much punishment, that the fight would be stopped with Ray on his feet.

Lennox had an ok chin - certainly not the glass that breaks from the first punch thrown.

    Rahman's shot was brutal.

    McCall's pretty good.

Been long time ago since i watched the fight but what about Cooper who wasn't the most durable fighter?

    Thanks for your opinions.

I do notice though, Chuvalo is 24lbs lighter then Mercer, so maybe Lenny will have teh confidence to try And stop him, cos he lacks the huge physical strength/bulky size to use for pressuring Big Lenny?

Anyways, I am going to put a nice burger on (one of) my Foreman Grills. :smoke

    You're right, and Ferguson!

Maybe where the last time I watched Ray it was him squashing people my perceptions have altered a bit. I really can't be arsed to plug the hard drive in and endeavour to re-assess, but I might have to.

Depends on what Lennox shows up - if he goes for a knockout than yes he can stop outclassed Chuvalo.

yeah, Mercer never actually knocked out many good fighters. The only ones i can think of are Morrison - who was chinny - and Damiani, who Mercer caught with a fluke punch that did really land properly ... it glanced the italian's nose and broke it. ironically, if that punch had landed properly it would have had far less of an effect.

One of the best ever. In the 1990s, I don' think anyone could have knocked him out even if they had hit him with a baseball bat.
