Which fighter do you rate that nobody else does?

I didn't mention one of my ''boys'', Mijares, Joyi, Narvaez, etc because they wouldn't really fit the criteria. There's a difference between ''underrated'' and ''relatively unknown''. I'm sure that if most people had watched Mijares half as much as I have they'd think of him as highly as I and others do.

Domestically I've liked what I've seen of David Price so far. Lot of people don't seem to rate him :think

Canelo Alvarez, for example, gets much less stick than Chavez for having done the same thing. And really, although the ginger one has shown more long-term potential their level of competition isn't all that far apart, yet one is a massive talent and the other a fraud.

 

I'd agree with this. The fighters he's faced so far haven't been great but he's looked impressive putting them away. Part of it might be to do with the apparent weak chin from the amateur's, which might be why he's not rated highly as a prospect.

 

You know man, Chavez jr stays busy and I like him for that. Not like these twice a year fighters. Like you say, he's young and will improve, as well as step up his level of opposition.


As for me, I think Israel Vasquez doesn't get enough love. Also, I think people are too harsh on Tyson Fury. That dude also has potential.

 

I think McDermott will beat Price, against anybody with some fire that knows how to fight a bit he's getting decked. He paws with his jab and panics when people get past it. He is totally one paced and doesn't have much of a chin. I think he would probably spark Sexton though.

 

he was considered a fraud because he got decisions in fights that he clearly lost imo. cuello being one i think. and his father assaulting a journalist that questioned one of his victories. and the fact that he was given a world title. and that he conspired with HBO, top rank and the WBC to help him avoid martinez in favour of fighting zbik. hes a decent up and comer but it will always turn people off if you are constantly having the deck stacked in your favour

 

James Hope.

Lost his last four, only won twice in eleven fights and has a very unflattering overall record of 6-9-1. However, I was impressed by him when I watched his fight against the-then unbeaten Bayan Jargal, a tough Mongolian fighter despite the deceiving record. Hope, if I remember correctly, gassed in the last 2-3 rounds but ended up getting a well deserved draw after an impressive showing in the first half of the fight. All I could keep thinking during the first four rounds was 'he is much better than his record would indicate' and if he had the backing 'he could have done something with his career'. Sadly, it's a familiar story in boxing and his role in boxing has become that of a journeyman. I'm not saying he would have been a world-beater, but Hope could have forged a decent career if someone had a bit more faith in him and given him that opportunity to build and develop as a fighter.

Also, why are Jack Johnson, Jimmy Wilde and Pong getting a mention in this thread?

Furys inconsistant but he's never in a dull fight and isn't **** like some people say. He's a bit like Khan without the dedication, not much going in the way of power or technique but more fighting heart than damn near everyone.

 

Exactly.:good I would argue Canelo's just got a higher number of decent wins rather than better wins than Chavez.

When Chavez fought Duddy I was hoping for Duddy win, because I've always been a very big Duddy fan, and at the time just liked Jr as an up and comer. But I saw good posters(I know I wasn't an ESB member at the time, I've seen it since due to doing research on Jr) say they wanted Duddy to win merely because they wanted to see him ''end this fraud'', pretty poor form I thought. I find it even more bizarre when people say it now, when he's actually beginning to establish himself as a ''top'' middleweight and scoring some solid wins.

 

I rate Johnny Saxton and Gil Turner very highly I think they would be terrors to todays welterweights.
