Basicly the title says it all. On the 29 its my first fight. Its an amateur fight and its not going on the record its an exhibition match and i think they will not even declare the winner. I am 23 and i will be fighting a 18yo I am training in boxing for one year and I think i have the basics now. A little background I am right-handed southpaw 181 cm 68kg The other guy is a bit havier around 70 kg but everybody is says to me he is just a kid (its his first fight also from what i ve heard) I have only competed at the national judo turnament when i was 18 i lost very quicly and i remember being very stressed out to the point that my performance was influenced i think. I was not a judo practitioner but i did ju justu for 15 years and I trained a bit in judo just to compete and in the nationals the level is very good. But i think this time I got a much better situation going. Now i would like someone to provide me with some tips like what to do before the fight to keep my mind straight or should I try to let my instinct out. Since I am a southpaw and being a southpaw gave me a lot of advantage in th gym since i am the only one. I have fight with the best guys in my class there is even a guy that is 190cm 85kg and does boxing 7 years and he is very fast and powerfull. But i have spar with him and it seems that everyone is thrown off at first with the southpaw guard and they cannot see the left hand usually. My coach says to me to circle to my right avoid his attack counter with one shot then pivon and land some left hooks and some straights also he showed me a technique that goes like this: step back right step back left right block and step with the back foot foreward and throw a straight left. Is this strategy a wise one in your opinion? Then we havent talked much about mentality but he said to me to go out to have fun with it and enjoy the exchanges. But i am afraid that i will go into survival mode and i will run out of gas quickly. What is the right attidude to go in with? I think that we will talk about these things but i wanted a second opinion.... Any tips and opinions are welcome please help me out a bit. The fight is going to be carried out with good headgear not open. (No foul protectors and 8 or 10oz gloves) Thank you guys
What your coach is suggesting is a conventional tactic; I was interested to hear that during some HBO commentary Manny Steward never really got hung up on which direction you should move in (in relation to counters and angles). For someone of your experience to be concerned about this might be counter productive and I am a little bit surprised your coach has brought it up. Your first fight will be a mental battle with yourself, impose your will on your opponent and you will win.
you should not be worried about your opponent..stick to what you know, what you have learnt and go in with some confidence in your ability and you will be fine.. A exerbition matchs are just the same as sparring mate.
Thanx mate ok i will have confidence in my southpaw style to **** up the other guys consentration. Hope so... Your last line is actually very relaxing when i say it ill try to remember it when i am getting punched.... Thanx
Go have fun, kid. The amateurs rarely ever mean anything: Its about the experience. You aren't in a tournament, you are fighting to get better at fighting. Don't stress, don't worry about results, just go practice what you do with 100% commitment. There will be plenty of time later to get worked up over winning.
Key words RELAX. My first two fights I was so nervous I threw up before the fights, and just about crapped my pants. The weird thing is I was in the ring sparring before hand with way more experienced fighters holding my own! This really affected my performance, even though I won both fights I was extremely nervous, and kind of resorted to instincts. Boxing is a thinking man's game, it is not a good thing to get emotional in there(from my experience, maybe others perform better with their emotions). When I am relaxed my punches are crisper. So try this when you DO NOT EVEN THINK about what your opponent can do. Just say to yourself the only way I am leaving that ring is if I am knocked out. Keep your confidence, but remember the fundamentals, that is that mistake I made I questioned myself, and my fundamentals weren't there. Good luck and let us know how you do
good luck man, honestly the advice id give you is to use your jab, since its both of your first contest, a good jab and angles, will open up your combos and dictate distance of the fight for you. as far as mentally, just think of it like an exhibition fight, its gonna be fun but in the end, no one wins, thats the scary part for me is getting the L but you wont have that in an exhibition fight, take deep breaths, think of it like your just sparring and it will be fun
Hey guys i did real good at leasr thats how i felt and my coach told me thanks for the support and tips i have also the video if you would like to see it and comment just dont tell me to keep my right hand up cause my coach like told me 1000 times =]
Trust your training. Keep a tight defense, work off your jab, and keep your composure and you'll be proud of yourself at the end. Just by getting into that ring you will prove you're tougher than most men. You will have a better understanding of yourself and what you're made of afterwards.
