    This is just simply not true. It's MMA, BJ Penn as good as he was/is doesn't beat everybody, especially when his grand reign at lightweight had him defending the title only thrice. That's not the king of all lightweights.

    Stoo already mentioned Frank and Bas.

    I'm not picking him to beat anyone in particular, but I would have to say Renzo Gracie would be competitive in this era. Renzo was normally fighting much larger opponents. He'd probably make 155 with no problem. Renzo wouldn't have to alter his old game plan. His Jiu Jitsu was that good.

    Mark Coleman was probably better earlier in his career than later. Coleman never really evolved as a fighter, so a younger Coleman was better. Go back and watch his match with Dan Severn. Severn was a high caliber wrestler, yet there was a clear difference in class.

    I would also like to point out that Randy Couture and Vitor Belfort bridged the gap successfully, in terms of being relevant then and now. I know Randy is retired, but he was good enough recently enough to be thought of as relevant in today's mma.

    The thread title states, and I think that everyone probably has missed this point, "Earliest fighter you'd give an even chance vs. one of the current UFC champs."

    I also think the wrestlers would have the best chance. That is the one dicipline that a good exponant can impose on his opponant if it's not going your way on the feet.

    I honestly think Urquidez could win a bantamweight or featherweight title with the right opponent. Guy had good judo and was one of the greatest strikers of all time.

    Hodge is a bit too small for heavyweight, but if he was larger I'd be decently confident of his chances against Dos Santos. (Unfortunately, he was too small...) If I had color footage of Jeffries wrestling against Roeber and of his boxing matches, I might pick him over Dos Santos as well, depending on what I saw. Especially if you throw in a modern S&C coach.

    I think Frank or Bas as well. If Bas would have come around now days I have no doubt he would have been GOAT or one of the best.
