I don't know, There doesn't seem to be anything on the internet mentioning his death. You would certainly think that a man who was in the ring multiple times with Walcott and Charles, plus was a top contender and ranked heavily by the Ring, that they would have a death date. I think its possible that he may still be living. Doing the math, he'd be roughly 99 right now if he is. Hell, Schmeling lived until he was about 99, before passing in 2005.
There's also a story that he sparked Walcott in sparring...but you can't talk about it because it makes blood come out of SQ's ears.
Here's Elmer Ray again looking to fire back at Ez Charles - he's really got that burning look in his eye here This content is protected
This content is protected A Created Elmer Ray for FIGHT NIGHT CHAMPION on the PS3. Now he will get his title shot at Joe Louis Credit on the create goes to ButcherWeyler who created Ray at my request..
Actually, he was often criticized in his own day as a tomato-picker. His "best" KO was two-round blowout of Lee Savold, who was an unranked journeyman at the time, albeit a normally sturdy one. The contemporary perception of Ray is that when he stepped up his level of comp (vs. Walcott and Charles) he failed to carry his vaunted KO power up to that level. Ray was offered a shot at Louis' title if he got by Walcott in their first fight, but after squeaking out that win, Ray's people felt he "wasn't ready" yet for Louis and opted for a rematch with Walcott first. Ray was beaten and dropped several times, and Walcott ultimately ended up getting the next shot at Louis instead.
