Initial thoughts were that it is far to soon but lets be honest AA isnt half what he was at 160lbs, his only real chance would be to starch Groves early as George is a bit of a slow starter otherwise i see him racing ahead on the cards and picking AA off later.
Exactly I think a lot of us are shocked at first when you think about it but then you think about how easily Abraham has been dealt with by Froch, Ward an Dirrell and you start thinking actually he could do a good job as long as he kept his focus.
I just think that the formula to beat AA has been demonstrated and that anyone with decent ability and discipline is capable of pulling it off!!!
Groves still needs more consistency about his work. He can maintain range, but he often sacrifices it and wings silly shots. Abraham isn't much of a threat at 168 unless you allow him to get into range. It would be a good fight in another four fights time, when Abe's a little more worn and Groves is more seasoned. It's the ideal "world stage" fight.
Thats more or less what I think. Groves does need to tidy some stuff up but he really does throw beatiful combinations. I washed the anderson fight again earlier and despite it being his 'worst performance' he still threw some beautiful combinations and he threw them from angles.
I thought it was a good development fight. Everyone complains that fighters don't get tested, Groves did and then tons of folk jumped on his back for getting in trouble. My attitude is that it's better it happens now when the opposition isn't so adept (sorry, Kenny!) and there's time to learn, than when you're in the ring with a much better operator. As long as Groves learns from it, then it's all good.
Wasn't Direll the reason behind Groves's comical black eye before the DeGale fight? That was the time that Groves and Direll went head-to-head, albeit in sparring...
There's a tiny clip of last say 15 seconds of there sparring together. Dirrell looked shattered i believe it was one of his first sparring sessions in a long while.
Pavlik pre-Hopkins absolutely, but even a sober version in 2012 isn't getting anywhere near that level again. He's done too much damage to himself. I'd make that fight for Groves in a heartbeat. Abraham's limited, but he comes in shape physically and mentally and has the power to stop you with one shot - Pavlik may have the power, but the other two areas a massive question marks for him now. Good risk / reward fight.
