So who do you think would give Floyd a hard night? A prime Mayorga at 147? Kirkland today? Pacquiao if he didn't become more controlled and technical and still fought wild like he did at 122-126?

I think Cotto will be far more competitive against Floyd than Canelo would. I don't think Canelo would give Floyd much trouble at all.

As for the thread, Cotto is a heavier puncher, has a better body attack, throws more combinations, and has a harder jab and left hook. Now that Mayweather does not use lateral movement as much, Cotto does that better too. I think Cotto gives a fine accounting of himself, but I wouldn't bet on him either. I'll be rooting for him though.

pretty much my thoughts. He has so much talent, yet he doesn't show the world what he can do with it. Oh well.

A good question. Yes, pac in 2007-9, but not Kirkland, his chin isn't solid enough. Prime Mayorga might actually be a scrappy hard fight for Floyd early at welter but I don't think he's elite. I agree, Canelo is too slow, that would be a field day for Floyd or even maybe for a slightly more prime Mosley.

Sergio is the best challenge: unorthodox, southpaw, and FAST too with a great chin, but he also has some flaws. I really wanted to see if my suspicion that Floyd couldn't time Pac's punches was right, but I'll never know. I don't think Floyd is perfect but this group of guys is not on his level. I still think Pac has the best chance of upsetting his apple cart, I think Cotto is just an easy style match up for Floyd.

Martinez vs Floyd is too damn risky for Floyd and we all know Floyd does not to take any risks. Cotto and Floyd is an interesting fight for me since I'm a Cotto fan too! I hope Cotto upsets Mayweather!!! Go Cotto!!!!

  9. Why Cotto?

But wasn't Martinez ok at 154 pounds? :patsch

Jlc was a great pressure fighter with an iron will who brought educated pressure could cut the ring and had the durability to get inside an attack the body. In addition he had great stamina and doesn't fade. That's really the difference jlc had the skill durability and stamina to pull it off cotto doesnt not only that he isn't half the body punched that jlc was. Cotto abandons attacking the body way to early in fights while jlc never would. Jlc stylistically matches up much better with pbf than cotto does.

I agree 1000%. All the guys "like" jlc had Floyd in ugly rounds: Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez, and even Hatton - that close pressure and cutting off the ring. Cotto is just not like that at all. (To be fair, Floyd outclassed all those guys but they were able to "pressure" him and he fought their fight on the ropes)

Miguel will be fighting Floyd at his best weight and has a nice jab - something Floyd has trouble with. That combined with confidence (coming off a big win over Marg) and fighting smarter makes Cotto a solid challenge. And who knows, there's always that possibility of Floyd losing focus, especially when jail time is running inside his head. Floyd hasn't fought at 154 in a long time and that can have a bad affect.

You can boycott it all you want and you probably have a right to do so. But it is what it is. It's not FMJ vs. Guerrero in May and that's a good thing. I can at least appreciate the fact that there's hope a big fight can be made with Arum out of the picture.

Excellent post. Educated pressure imo is the best way to get to Pbf. The type of pressure cotto brings won't really bother pbf IMO.

One could easily argue Cotto has the better jab...and the better left rip to the body. That is about it, though. Mayweather edges him in every other category, tangibles and intangibles. Final tally is like 100-2.

Cotto's pressure is smarter than most. He'll smother himself a lot less than most opponents who take away their own punching room in their desperation to get at him.
