I dont think Roach was dumb enough to count on Marquez being more aggressive. But I think he was right to count and expect a 38 year old climbing two weight divisions would be too slow to lead or to counter against Pacquiao if he gameplaned Pacquiao to force Marquez to come to him.
I voiced before the fight that my worry was that Pacquiao would force Marquez to lead, and if Marqeuz at 38 was'nt quick enough to get off, he could find himself getting outboxed by a fighter who was simply going to be to quick and fast for him. Its what happend to Marquez in the Mayweather fight.
Marquez was better conditioned for Welter in this Pacquiao fight, plus it helped tremendously that Pacquiao had nowhere near the skills and know how of Mayweather.

I will say this about Roach. I thought his gameplan was spot on to have Pacquiao gameplan to box against an aging skill fighter like Marquez.
To have sent Pacquiao to steamroll through Marquez would have played right up Marquez' ally and with the way Marquez was potently landing his right hand, it may have been Pacquiao tasting canvas.

If JMM is so ****ing smart how come he failed to put a gameplan together that won him the fight three times in a row?

JMM looked about as quick and stronger. Pac looked a little slower.

Because Pac didn't fight as reckless as he used to be.

    JMM was always Pac's kypronite

JMM fought a more cautious fight, always had his guard high protecting his chin. He moved up in weight and carried his power and speed much better than his previous WW outing.

Pac boxed more this time as well

Because JMM is smarter and technically superior to PacMan. That's the reason why JMM is still fighting at 38yrs of age. PacMan has relied on his speed and power. Now that his natural advantages are slowly deteriorating, he's slowly looking more human especially against an elite boxer. You can bet your bottom dollar that PacMan won't be beating other P4Pers at 38yrs of age like JMM.

Personally, I thought Pacquiao won the 1st, and JMM won the 2nd and 3rd. Not a fan of either fighter, although I love to watch both. It's just the way I scored it on a RBR basis. All 3 were close though, obviously.

pac came from the streets and was never known for his technical skills in the first place. this is why his achievements are given a lot of credit, he wins fights where he supposedly should lose.

pac tried to outbox jmm who has been doing it his whole career. i think that's pac's ego and he wants to show everyone his development. but the truth is, he can't be just a better boxer than jmm overnight. pac should have pressured jmm like he did before. he seemed to have enjoyed counter punching too much in the third fight.

You can pretty much put it down to the fact that Pac's physical attributes have been deteriorating over the years and therefore he has been forced to change his style to being more technical, but at the end of the day even though he's had tremendous success in this style he'll always be at his best as a dynamo. JMM's style is less conducive to wear and tear and also less dependant on youth. Also full credit to JMM who came fully prepared and in great condition.

    1. Pacquiao believing all this hype that he'd improved technically (which he has tbf) tried to box more with Marquez. When ironically his more wild herky jerky style would've served him better.

    2. Marquez had already had a two looks at Pacquiao and had increasingly solved the puzzle. It was easier for him this time because he'd mastered Pacquiao habits and the surpise element wasn't there anymore.
