    It seems more like a reaffirmation of equal status than a legitimate offer. The slave-master would have been nicer than expected to compensate him so much money at that time, and I'm sure the former slave was aware of it. I too wonder if he got his money, but I'm sure that either way, he got a level of satisfaction at being able to write such a letter and make such demands as a freer man.
