Round 7

Lots of tying up. Rios is working the body a bit with right uppercuts while his left is trapped. The ref is having to get in there with his sleeved spatula very often. The two of them grind each other down into the bottom rope with sheer body weight, both sinking to their knees. They're pushing too close together for either to get a clean shot off. Both are throwing, though. Solano is missing wild overhand rights and giving chase. Rios is backing up and slipping, jabbing a bit. Solano is hacking away with overhand lefts now, having turned southpaw again. Right jab to the forehead by Solano.

IB Funfact:

Arnuldo Solano has never knocked anybody out in his pro career. He is 11-1 (0).

Since I pretty much have him needing a knockout at this point - or at least a knockdown - it would seem his is a lost cause, especially as the visitor. He's a wily and persistent SOB, though.

 

Round 8

Rios circles to his left, avoiding the right jab of Solano as the Nicaraguan continues to experiment as a southpaw. Very little going on. Rios opening back up with his left jab a bit, scoring better than Solano with the right. Almost no power punches this round - but blessedly fewer clinches than in the last few. Just nonstop circling and pawing across long distance.

Round 9

A few stiff left jabs from Rios. More circling. Solano bum-rushes Rios and swats him to the ground with some chopping left and right overhands. The referee rules no knockdown, and calls it a slip. Solano was hopping up and down excitedly, obviously thinking he scored a legitimate knockdown. Rios doesn't seem hurt. The crowd is getting antsy, not sure what just happened. Solano is pouring on the pressure, throwing some hard wild shots. Rios is stuck in a corner, getting wailed on with left hooks and looping rights. Solano is orthodox again. Rios covers up and edges his way back out to open water. Clinch. Solano hunkers down and tries to jab up at Rios. High right hand by Solano. BIG COUNTER RIGHT UPPERCUT BY RIOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Solano DOWN LIKE A TON OF BRICKS!!


KO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Wow. Round 9 almost made rounds 1-8 worth it.

Solano was coming on strong, and looking like he might register his first ever career stoppage. Certainly dominating the round. Then, BAM! Rios lures him into the trap after backing into a corner, and flips the script with one shot.
