Was Oscar really that impressive in his earlier pro fights?

I don't think so anymore since I rewatched some if his earlier fights yesterday..

I want to make it clear that I was a HUGE fan of him years back.
I bought his career set and watched all his fights in awe.

But yesterday I decided to watch some of his old fights again and I think he was nothing extroardinary, except for his power.
If I compare him with a young/up-and-coming fighter like Gamboa, DLH was not so talented at all:huh
He was stiff, robotic. His jab, combinations and power where good though.

    Anyone agree/disagree?

I was impressed with his earlier fights. You do have to take some factors into account though. He was fighting guys with decent records. Did he ever fight anyone with a losing record?

He didn't really ever focus on defense until he was with Floyd Senor. He made a leap then, in terms of converting talent to skill.

he was impressive during his younger years, but he is only annoying now haha. If he meets gamboa when he was still a young up and coming fighter like the latter, Ill give the edge to oscar

He never fought a single fighter with a losing record.....and that is impressive. Gamboa is on that same road.

Oscar never ever bought anything new to boxing and when he does retire personally i wont be moved! he has some boxing talent and for somebody who makes big fights for the fans then they get my respect, personally in his earlier days loads of people are trying to impress! Oscars had talent but what ever he was ment to do in boxing he has already done it! but what ever oscar does eventully then good luck to him! but retirement should be the way to go!

Oscar was quite talented and exciting early in his career. What is missing from him as a fighter is a truly heroic effort, winning a fight he with the odds against him...something like Leonard's TKO of Tommy Hearns...if Oscar would be outboxed like that, he just wouldn't reinvent himself during the fight and become the stalker/puncher like Leonard did. Oscar had outstanding boxing talent but neither outstanding athleticism nor an outstanding will to win.

You also have to remember that Oscarmania was a phenomenon that happens when a fighter steamrolls his way to the top. It creates a vibe of invincibility. This was how Oscar entered the picture, much like Pacqiou did more recently. Combine that with spectaculour finishes and you have a star. The problem with Oscar's rise, imo, is that he would knock out his opponents so early that he never had to work on his stamina. His natural gifts were speed and power and the skills he had to learn once he left Alcazar. The skillset is relatively new, in a fight like the Vargas fight its cool to see that when the skillset failed him, he went back to the earlier puncher's style and got his ko. To this day I am not sure to call him a boxer or a puncher. But someone said something like Oscar never had to loose like Sugar Ray only to come back as a stalker and produce a ko but I see the Vargas fight in that way, as well as the Quartey fight and the Oba Carr fight.
