http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/boxin...be-at-joe-calzaghe-was-racist-89520-20312718/ Bernard Hopkins has refused to apologise for his racist dig at Joe Calzaghe. Hopkins sparked controversy when he taunted Calzaghe by telling him ahead of their April 19 showdown in Las Vegas that he has never lost to a "white boy". A defiant Hopkins insisted he stood by his jibe when the pair came face-to-face in London yesterday, claiming he was simply dabbling in mind games. "I said what I said. Do I regret it or do I apologise? No. Come April 19, it's up to Joe to prove me a liar. If he thinks I'm a liar, then beat me and show the world I'm wrong," said the former undisputed world middleweight champion. "I believe in what I said because it's historical information about my career. I say what other people are afraid to say. "I'm trying to win the fight before the fight starts. Ali and Mike Tyson used to be the best at it. I did it with Felix Trinidad. "His nation hated me and it put pressure on him and I knocked him out. I'm just trying it again with Joe."
The statement was meant as a Promotional Gimmick - some people just took it the wrong way. However - if the fight gets good ratings - then I think he's done his job well.
Who cares??? Does it matter??? Besides, I doubt he's racist. He's partnered with a Mexican, and the CEO of Golden Boy is a Jew. Think about it... It's called P-R-O-M-O-T-I-O-N. It's what they do to sell a fight...get people like you to buy into this nonsense.
Can we let this drop? Joe himself has gone on record to say "Hopkins knows what he's doing [to sell tickets] and I don't think he's a racist" It's an obvious easy angle to take by the British tabloids.
I think bashing a race or culture is ****. That needs to be left out of the promotional aspect of boxing. Go Calzaghe! And I'm an American.
Why is this forum not moderated better? They need to create two sticky's. One for the prediction thread & one for a general B-Hop's/Joe thread. Anything else, unless it's something utterly profound, should just be binned.
Exactly, it's like when someone uses the N word and says, I'm not racist, some of my best friends are black:nut Who cares is right, BHop is a douche
Ummmm...I'd say that saying "I would never lose to a white boy" is a bit different than calling someone the N WORD...but that's just me. Don't you get it??? Controversy sells tickets. B-Hop wants to get paid, even if he does lose to a white boy haha
i agree that people are blowing this up into something it isn't but the above highlighted part is complete and utter shite. it's a racists favourite excuse. "huuuuuh i can't be racist i've got a black mate"
