Found this on youtube, great fight, the left hook that puts jerry down was brutal, and yet he still got up and came back, guy had true warrior pride and spirit. Seems jerry was a tad lucky he got the 2nd fraizer fight,he so nearly lost this one, many a lesser man would have never got back up from that punch. But does any one have any decent info on alexander, was he a good fighter, every a contender,or just seen as a easy win, maybe jerry took him to lightly. [yt]3UHDm7EzeME[/yt] Great fight though, the KO at the end is nasty looking, though alexander does get back up,jerrys got to be my fav fighter maybe ever, love the fact you never knew what would happen when he entered the ring.
Thanks Joe. I never saw that one. Fights like this are a credit to boxing. Quarry took a hard hook to the jaw. I don't think he saw it comming. While he got up steady enough, I think the round ending right after he did might have saved him from a TKO loss. Quarry always had plenty of fire in him. To watch him come back and score the Ko in the next round was impressive.
Alexander was a mediocre journeyman, nothing more. He hit Quarry with a Sunday hook with everything behind it. Interesting that this tuneup took place only 60-90 days after the Shavers bout. IMO this fight should have shown Jerry that he should consider hanging it up, let alone take the second Frazier fight three months later...

Jerry was "suppose" to fight Foreman after the Shavers fight for the title. But Foreman decided an Ali Fight was the way to go and Quarry was left out in the cold. I think Quarry lost his desire from the Shavers fight on....and they made him fight Frazier again who he knew he couldn't beat. Based on styles...he probably had a decent chance to beat Foreman....but no chance against Ali & Frazier.
I was at that fight in the Nassau Colosseum, Alexander was a banger and Jerry got caught, I saw sparks fly off Jerry's ass when he hit the floor but he got up and took Joe out.....I seen Jerry fight Lyle,Shavers,Foster and all live and this was the hardest I seen him hit. Joe KO'd Jose Louis Garcia in 1
He was a journeyman, but he was acknowledged as having a big punch, if nothing else. He had previously KO'd some-time rated contender Jose Luis Garcia (the first man to beat Ken Norton) in 1 round.
Based on styles, or any other way of judging it, Quarry would have gotten totally waxed in a 74 scrap with George. I love Jerry, one of my favorite fighters of all time. Foreman would have had him out for lunch... Two things: >no one stops George pre-Ali (or post) the Ali stoppage was exhaustion among other things that have long since been ignored. >Jerry's punch was a tad overrated. Outside of Shavers (which I still consider an anamoly) what top contender did Jerry ever stop? (enough of the Thad Spencer/ Mac Foster posturing) IMO its better that Jerry never fought George in 73 or 74. We can still have our, what if, arguments but...a 73-74 Jerry-George bout would be far worse than anything Frazier laid on Quarry...
Bummy: Some experts claim that Jerry was shot by the time the Alexander fight occured. They say that even though Lyle and Shavers were two of Quarry's best career wins, that he showed signs of ring wear and decaying physical abilities even in these bouts. Supposedly the Alexander fight was the final proof. Certainly Quarry looked like a shadow of his former self in his next fight, against Frazier. What do you think? Was Quarry a seriously faded fighter by 1974?
But don't overlook that Alexander was a powerful puncher. I think this fight underscores why contenders should never take powerpunchers -- regardless of how mediocre they are -- as tune up fights.
He showed me a lot getting off the floor vs Alexander, he got caught and Joe A. could punch....but Jerry met a girl that he married and he was managing music groups like 3 dog night, he got into a bad habit of drinking and doing cocaine a big fad back in the 70's the girl was a socialite, liked to party and brought Jerry down... He impressed me in 1970 vs vs 24-0 24KO Mac Foster, looked solid against the undefeated Lyle in 73 and the Shavers fight was quick but who can argue with a 1st rd. KO and it was against the ESB highly heralded Shavers but Alexander sparked him but to his credit he rose and stopped Joe, then he was stopped by Frazier could not KO George Johnson and then totally out of shape vs Norton (he admitted drugs and booze) and even though Norton got the best of him he landed a punch and had Kenny out on his feet, the ref interrupted and Quarry did not realize how hurt Ken Norton was but yea Jerry was toast by then and the bad thing was the girl left him in the end but she was also toast and they were both to blame
I may be wrong, but I thought I noticed that the Quarry who beat Lyle didn't seem as fast or dynamic as the Quarry who beat Foster, Mathis, Spencer, and Patterson. It's possible that a younger Quarry would never have been hit by the bomb that Alexander landed. And of course, Quarry looked shot against Frazier and Scrapiron a few months later. Did Quarry start doing coke as early as '74? Or was that something that started only after his retirement?
I think the partying started when he started going out with his 2nd wife, she was a glamorous blond and the EVE in Jerry s life he was slipping but he admitted that he should have never entered the ring the night he fought NORTON because of his poor condition, funny but he had Ken hurt bad in that fight and did not know it but you may be right, he did not really press with Lyle after he hurt him like he did vs Foster but Lyle also went into the defensive mode.
Try 144 days after DEC 14, 1973 TO MAY 8, 1974 Joe Alexander knew all about Quarry in 1970, training with Muhammad Ali, and Rufus Brassell, HE WAS A TOUGHER test than anyone will ever know. Still Jerry reserved and poised took good care of business- he had too!
Arlene "Charlie" Quarry, a former Miss Indiana was Jerry's 2nd wife. Jerry's manager Gil Clancy stated that she could simply drive Jerry crazy. She was in a couple of Elvis movies, having bit parts and was in some "beach" movies. After the split with Quarry she married Mike Smith, the lead singer for the band "The Dave Clark Five" and stayed with him until his death.
