I rate Gamboa is goin up way too fast and picking on the 2nd best LW, il give him mad props for this fight but imo Rios will be too much for him and will stop him late. FOTY candidate for sure tho! I wasnt too amped for this fight when it was announced, due to Rios looking drained against Murray, but hearing him workin with a dietician and already focused on loosing the weight puts my mind at ease... WAR RIOS!!!! :bbb
this fight is tough to pick. It is a good one. Gamboa cannot brawl or he could get hit and stopped. He has to use his speed and dictate the pace. We all know Gamboa is the more skilled guy, but if Brandon can get this into a brawl and get Gamboa out of his fight plan, he can take him into a war and Rios can win the title. I give Gamboa credit for taking this fight and jumping up in weight. This is a good brawling 140 pound guy in Rios vs. a very good and possible future great in Gamboa who is 130. It is a good matchup and both guys are fighting the best guy they can. This is the kind of fight which makes boxing great. Floyd doesn't understand the kind of heart these two guys have to sign to fight this. Regardless of who wins, I like to see fights like this happen. No matter what, we know it will be good.
And you will not lose your money! This is a smart man who knows his boxing. He is not buying that Rios hype and sees just what I see, a way faster, slicker, skilled and athletic Gamboa beating Rios to the punch in every single round and possibly stopping him late. The Cubans are FINALLY back after more than 50 years of absence. Castro banned them from competing in the pros but these defectors are going to make Cuba shine once again. Gamboa is going to be P4P top 5 after beating Rios.
Tricky fight to predict. I do agree it looks a bridge too far for Gamboa, ANY LW would have a very tough time vs. Rios, but a FW? Can you imagine Rafa Marquez or Chris John in there? It takes one 145lbs left hook on fight night and the Cuban is out. With that said, watching Campillo easily handle Cloud after a rocky start and remembering the numerous occasions when a fast boxer(puncher) defeated and hard hitting pressure fighter - it might turn out to be a one-man Cuban exhibition.
Gamboa has greatly improved his defence in his last 3 fights. He hardly brawls anymore and only picks his shots from comfortable angles. Gamboa's defence is very underrated, that's how he comfortably beat Salido with his good defence and counter punching skills. JuanMa Lopez is the one who doesn't know the meaning of the word " defence " ... Actually, Gamboa is currently considered one of the most difficult fighters to be hit cleanly ( Solis and Ponce de Leon fights for example ), and it's because of his great defensive technical skills and his lighting leg movements and hand speed. He also avoids a lot of punches simply because of his great athleticism. and let's not forget he has been training with Steward for the past 3 months...
Rios wins a tough fought battle. Either way, neither will fold quick, it will be extremely tough for both. It comes down to the weight on this one, I think.
Rios is a good fighter, great power and tremendous heart. But Gamboa will be way too fast and the speed will be the difference in the fight, not just the handspeed but the footspeed and the reflexes. Rios wont be knocking out Gamboa nor will he be knocked out. Gamboa will win this, it wont be by a big margin but it will be done convincingly enough. Something like 116-112
