Why do some people only watch the heavyweight division?

because of what it used to be, not what it is

back in the day when someone said "lets watch the big fight tonight" it was 90% of the time a HW fight because of the glitz and glamour associated with Ali, Spinks, Cooney, Tyson, Foreman, Holmes, Frazier etc etc

 

That's not it at all and I don't think you could be anymore wrong. When Ali, Liston, Frazier, Foreman were around the heavyweight division was at an all time high. When these retired the likes of hearns Duran leonard Hagler took over as they were the p4p best at the time. Then the resurgence if heavyweight talent like Lewis, holyfield, Tyson, Bowe came about but had the likes of Chavez, Whitaker, de la Hoya, Trinidad Vargas winky hopkins toney jones jr leading into the twentieth century brought the emphasis and p4p down into the middle of the weight spectrum and then with the likes of Barrera Morales Hamed strengthening the lower divisions along with mayweather pac Mosley Marquez that have Rose in weight much like hearns Leonard and Duran did. Also a lot of the names mentioned provided excitement and as the ATG heavyweights like Tyson Holyfield and Lewis were retiring there was nothing left for the boxing fans to care about. This modern day we have the likes of gamboa Broner donaire that will probably rise up through the weights much like mayweather, PAC etc with fighters like cotto Bradley, khan, martinez as the bigger draws in boxing today whereas there is nothing coming through on the heavyweight scene and especially for Americans.

People watch what is hyped well and then aired.

In the old days, with the exception of SRL & Oscar, that meant Heavyweights.

And, of course, those HW guys almost always came to WIN, at any cost. They didn't dance around trying to protect their records, so the networks knew it was safe to spend $$$$ promoting those fights.

Today?

 

I would watch it if it is exciting, but they are not right now. As far as other posters stating HW's would beat lighter weights or what another poster stated it's like watching college basketball playing pro. Who cares. The lighter weights are 95% entertaining than HW's in any era. I believe it has always been that way. Even when Ali in the 70's was around, he would give you a boring fight, but then you have Duran kicking someones ass. I love the HW division, but right now it is boring for the exception of Sasha vs Huck. We need more fights at HW like these two men. Shame that one had to move up to HW to show us some true HW excitement.

 

Yeah, but all drama aside, I would rather see Haye-Adamek or Haye-Vitali than any WW fight. Floyd-Pac carries a lot of drama, but I'm not really into it as much as other people are because I really don't have a love or hate for Pac. He diesn't evoke any emotion whatsoever...


Plus, the fact that I'm 6'1" 225 solid, I can more relate to the bigger guys.

 

Plus, the heavyweights carry a worldwide aura of invincibility with them. People see Heavyweights and not only believe they could kick anyone's ass their size, but they could kick anyone's ass... Period.


Go to a Heavyweight title fight and no one in the entire building of 20,000 and very very few (3-4 people at most) of the 1.5 million people watching are gonna be able to **** with either guy in the ring.

 

I prefer the lower weights but I get it....the dominant Heavyweight champ can mostly likely kick anyones ass on earth including boxers in lower divisions who are more skilled. It's interesting to watch and see who the worlds baddest man is even if this era is weak I don't think anyone would argue that Wlad would certainly beat every other fighter on earth save for maybe his bro.

There are way more exciting and skilled fights in the lower weight class divisions.
