yep spot on he broke him down really well, i think after he got dropped and came back in the next round to hammer lopez thats when solido won the fight, lopez was mentally ruined, but he has got the heart of a lion nobody can question that, he went out on his shield and gave his all but if im honest i dont think he will ever be the same, once a tough guy gets out toughed they find it really hard to come back, it reminded me of chavez breaking camatchos heart and shutting him down:bbb

Great post that, I agree with every single word. I strongly agree about Vasquez & Castillo too as 2 of the best in recent years. Vasquez is the epitome of a pressure fighter to me whilst Castillo was excellent too.

 

Timothy Bradley is in my mind one of the most effective pressure fighters in my mind today. And going back to BB and Teeto's points, it's not because he is a swarmer who charges at opponents. It's because he cuts off the ring so adeptly and then has the defensive nous to avoid a lot of punches on the inside whilst also throwing very spiteful body punches- another key attribute of great pressure fighters IMO, their bodywork.

I prefer outside fighters in general who like counterpunching but I have to say there's nothing better to watch than an elite pressure fighter at work.

 

chavez vs rosario - brutal, unrelenting mental pressure, with a view defensive tricks tossed in

the final 2 / 3 mins of pressure duran vs cuevas - stalking calm vicious finishing pressure

I think Castillo suffered a bit from being in Chavez' shadow reputation wise. It's true though, he was a poorer version of him stylistically.

 

After my time in the wilderness this is a great thread to come back to. I do think bodywork in general is an underused skill in boxing as a whole, its one of the reasons I like Crolla.

 

it's true, I don't think he's that talented tbh but he is a good ring general whose main strength is his strength (I know that sounds ****ig stupid haha). He's the epitome of someone who is effective but not always flashy really, I'm not a big fan tbh but I will give him his due credit on being more substance than flash, which at the end of the day is the most important thing.

 

If we're going to mention the best swarmers in recent times, we have to mention Paul Williams.

If we're talking sluggers, I'm throwing Jorge Arce in the hat. He's different to a Juanma imo, Juanma is more of a composed puncher, who likes to allow his opponent some space and tee off, whereas Arce is just off his head and so confident in his power that he is gunna throw everything at you and love it.

The bit in bold sums him up perfectly for me. Like yourself, I wrote in Slip's thread on the Pacquiao-Bradley fight that I just don't see him being the man to trouble and beat Manny but it doesn't mean I don't have a lot of respect for him as a fighter.

As I said in that thread I consider him a very good fighter in pretty much all aspects but not particularly outstanding in 1, and that's what will cost him I reckon vs Manny.

 

We used to call JC Superstar 'HMRC' or 'The IRS' in US terms. He always taxed you in a fight.
