p.s. i think ali beats dempsey. dempsey is best comparble to frazier imo. but only 7 or 8 out of 10. 2 or 3 out of 10 dempsey KO's ali

Byrd was no harder to hit than Dempsey.

Or he might have been, but that's because he defended to set up defense.

Demspey used aggressive defense and was an excellent counterpuncher, except unlike Byrd, Dempsey actually knocked people the **** out.

    Well as usual,,,,,,,,,many good arguments....

But, is it the young Jack Dempsey versus the young Cassius Clay.

If it is, I would lean towards Dempsey.

He just threw too many hard punches from all angles.
Not to say it would be easy or a walk-in-the-park, but a close
    fight on all accounts.

You know for one thing, Dempsey would not be intimidated
and would be in excellent shape.

The worst possible style match-up for Dempsey. This is a one-sided drubbing.

I like Dempsey. He was a colorful figure and he did alot to bring boxing along to the modern era. Not just the $$$ and attention he brought but his style of fighting was ahead of its time. His attacking style fast paced style was something new to the heavyweight.

He was quick for that time, compared to the big slow oafs he was facing. He was able to hurt guys that outweighed him by 40lbs or more. They were easy targets for him.

With all that said Ali by ownage. Ali was tall and rangy with Coordination of a smaller man. Dempsey`s wide shots would be easy for Ali to pick off. He`s going to eat the jab on the way in and the quick straight right is coming behind it to keep him honest.

Ali was bigger, stronger, faster, more agile, smarter and had a superior defense.

I love Jack Dempsey but sorry fans Babe Ruth probably couldnt hit Sandy Koufax either.

See Doug Jones vs. Cassius Clay

And Jack Dempsey punched much harder than Jones.

It wasn't just Jack's power, it was the speed in the way the punch was delivered.

bad day and matchup for Jack Dempsey, it would be like facing Gene Tunney on steroids, speed and PCP.

Jacks a brave guy though and would go the distance, and would definitely worry Ali several times.

Its hard to admit Jack would get beaten because hes such a COOOL hero type, with such a COOOL Irish name, but one has to face the facts, his very heavy but wild swings will get him nowhere against the supreme speedster. Jack Bauer, he aint.

He was 21 years old at that time. Dempsey was losing fights in his early years even getting knockedout.

i'll have to disagree on that. Ali wasn't in his prime at the time, and he under estimated Jones. That's like me bringing up Tunney

    OK,,,,,How about Zora Folley,,,

Ali was in his prime, and Zora was almost 36.
Wearing cement shoes, the almost 36 year-old Zora was able to score on a fast Ali.

No knock-out here in Demspey vs. Ali, but a more grueling fight
    than expected.

Tell you what, let's match the Dempsey that got KTFO in one against Flynn with the Ali that out-classed Ernie Terrell, then we can all learn loads about both fighters by picking our favourite.
