Why professional boxers do not seem to be fans of boxing?

I was just reading one of the main articles, a question and answer piece with Randy Caballero and one of the questions was "Do you follow the sport and consider yourself a fan of the game?" and his answer was “No, I wouldn’t call myself a huge boxing fan. I mean, I watch all the big fights on SHOWTIME and follow the guys I’ve come up with, but that’s about it.”

I've been noticing this more and more that this seems to be quite common with boxers nowadays.

I know Serge Yannick here in Melbourne, Australia and the thing that amazed me the first time I met him a couple of years ago was that he had no idea of who the elite fighters were in his weight class or who the current top P4P fighters are. He also didn't show any interest in the history of boxing and the great fighters of the past.

I was wondering what your views on this are. Is this something to do with the mindset of current fighters nowadays; boxing just being solely a money making thing for them? Do you think it reflects the general diminishing love of the sport?

Or are there still many boxers around like Mike Tyson who studied the sport and history religiously?

I for one love this sport more and more everyday; the history and stories of past fighters is amazing and there are great fighters coming through the ranks all the time.

I do find it strange when a fighter isn't a fan of the very sport they are in. Victor Ortiz is another that said he doesn't following boxing at all.

    Lots of factors...

I know many boxer's who are a 'fan' of the sport
    or follow the sport
or know the history of the sport deeply

Or only got into boxing as it was an opportunity to become something...

Don't take your work home with you. Preparing for a Boxing match is grueling, more so mentally than physically. If your mind is attatched to Boxing all the time then you'll grow to hate this sport.

I think some of them think its uncool to follow a sport they participate in. Its that mindset that your not meant to love your job. Not for all of course but i have got that impression from a few of the boxers I've spoke to who have said this.

I like listening to metal, but I don't want to listen to that **** ALL THE TIME. I assume its the same thing for a Boxer.

what I noticed is that the most skillful boxers are boxing nerds

Mayweather (pretends he doesn't follow it but has admitted to even watching a JCC Jr fight) , Hopkins, and Ward

At the end of the day, it's still a job and career. There's going to be some people who are more dedicated to their work than others.

Haahaha I was asking myself the exact same thing the other day ! :D Always amazes me when a boxer says that. Recently, Derek Chisora told it too, here look the 11.00 mark

****, I dont believe that. If you aint paying attention, you aint winning. A lot of fighters say that in order to make it look like they aint concerned but thats bull****. Some fighters may not be concerned with fighters outside thier devision but Ill bet they can tell you about every fighter in thier division from the tenth ranked on up.
