Would Cotto beating Money be as much of an upset as Leonard beating Hagler at MW?

How do you guys perceive this? Do you think the magnitude of Cotto's win would be as large?

I personally think Cotto beating Money would be in the talks of one of the biggest upsets ever myself, donno about you guys.

Good analogy,it wouldn't be far off.Only thing is this fight doesn't have the same crossover appeal as the last one,so it's still a fan's fight.Leonard-Hagler was the kind of fight that got everyone watching.

Leonard was moving up in weight against Hagler. Mayweather, not Cotto, is the one moving up in weight. They are no more comparable than any other fight between two elite guys where one is heavily favored over the other.

If Cotto were to win over Mayweather, I don't think it would be one of the biggest upsets of all time by any means, not close. There is no way in my mind that a Cotto win over Mayweather at junior middleweight would be a bigger upset than a Sonny Boy Jaro KO over Wonjongkam at flyweight. So it wouldn't even be the biggest upset of 2012. That said, any victory that is not a robbery over Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be one of the very best ever.

It would be a much bigger upset. The line for Hagler/Leonard was much closer than this line. Leonard was a great fighter and was never out of a fight in his whole career. Cotto is not in Mayweather's class. Smoak's point about Jaro's win is ****ing out there considering no one but the combatants will remember that fight in 10 years.

I was pretty young during Leonard vs Hagler but I remember it being a pick em fight.. A Cotto win is not beyond the realm of possibility, but he has to make it ugly and not go into the fight believing he can win off his boxing skills alone.

Please, don't you ever bring up or compare this fight to 2 of the horsemen of apocalypse's fight. Props to Cotto for fighting PAC but Fraudweather shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence with Leonard and Hagler. There's a very big difference between true men of the sport and spoiled "BURATS" of the sport ;)

Hagler/Leonard was an upset in that it was a ****ing robbery.

Cotto beating Mayweather would be along the lines of the Tyson/Douglas upset.

Does anyone really believe this? Cotto may not be an atg, but to say he's like Buster Douglas is a joke and you're a *****.

Wouldn't a ***** try to build up Cotto as a world beater, dumb****?
Buster has a better win on his resume than Cotto ever will; plus he was a better boxer when focused.

    Cotto has no chance. None.

Why? Because it was in Thailand? Because it was at flyweight?

You are obviously very egocentric and bias in your following of boxing. To each his own, I suppose. I just don't respect people who choose to neglect and not value lower weight classes in favor of heavily promoted, widely viewable, and heavier weighted fighters.

Cotto, the #1 ranked fighter at 154 lbs, #8-15 P4P (from lists I've seen)
    beating
Mayweather, the #1 ranked fighter at 147 lbs, #1-2 P4P (from lists I've seen)

    OR

Jaro, unranked, 33-10-5 journeyman, lost 5 of previous 15 fights
    beating
Wonjongkam, the lineal champion at flyweight, #7-15 P4P (from lists I've seen)

So, you tell me which is a bigger "upset?"

Very Well Done Nonito Smoak. The Flyweights don't get nearly enough credit or recognition.

I disagree wholeheartedly that Cotto has no chance or that he can't win this in a boxing match. He just can't make the silent agreement to fight Mayweather's fight, he has to make Mayweather fight on HIS terms which is very possible. Cotto has the tools to get it done, it's whether or not he puts them to use in the right way.

With that said, I think it most definitely would be as big an upset as Hagler/Leonard or bigger simply because people are giving Cotto much less of a chance against Mayweather than they did Leonard vs Hagler. Some people here act as if the fight has no business happening at all because Mayweather is such a sure win, I don't think that to be the case at all. Mayweather may be the favorite as he should be, but this is not nearly as one sided as a lot of folks are trying to make it out to be. Leonard-Hagler wasn't thought to be as one sided as people are making Cotto-Mayweather to be. They probably had a lot more reason back then to think Leonard had less of a chance against Hagler who was an absolutely merciless beast that could box as well as brawl, than people today giving Cotto no chance against Mayweather.

The early odds have Mayweather as a bigger betting favorite than Hagler
